  • Hey guys...

Sorry I've been away for a few weeks, but I am in France right now (just got married!) and I'll be back in LA in about 10 days. I'll go check out the Lemur asap and let you know my impressions - it seems to be a great piece of gear, albeit expensive!

I will also try to get you some details on how to get this DP thing going.

    Cheers,
    Jerome

  • Auguri, auguri !!!
    Congratiolations to your marriage.

    Besides:
I have Logic Express running on a 2.0 Dual G5 as a slave.
It works ok, no pops like in Bidule (Due to the fact that I can buffer it with 1024)
    Only Limitation: I can only adress one In-Port (=16 Channels/ 8 East West/+ 8 VI) in Logic Express....to bad...

    Cheers

    Jerome, many congratulations!
Let's hope for your sake she can cook!

    Oliver,
You wrote of having LE as a slave.
Do you have it wired into the master via ethernet for audio and midi or by some other fashion?

    Regards,

    Alex.

  • Jerome,

Congratulations on your marriage! That's very exciting. Enjoy your honeymoon!

    Mark

  • Even on his honeymoon he still comes to the VSL forum. His wife is either very understanding, or he's in big trouble.

Regardless, congratulations to Mr and Mrs "Jerome" for an eternity of happy years together. [:P]

  • Alex,

LE is triggered by Midi over Lan and Audio goes out via ADAT Lightpipe with a RME CArd (Slave) into the Master Motu Interface (Word Clocked)

    Regards

    Oliver

  • Ok, I checked the Lemur last week at Ed Shearmur's studio, and it is absolutely *amazing*. Providing you know (or know someone who knows) how to program it properly.

My friend Kayla Schmah, Ed's amazing tech assistant, programmed the whole thing. She made 6 different templates on the Lemur, on which you can choose over 32 articulations per orchestra section. You just select a big button which tells you which articulation will be played.

In the background, it sends a midi controller message to Digital Performer. Like a keyswitch, except that it's a controller (so you don't see it on the score page).

Let's say you're on a Violin track for example. Just pop-up the Strings section page on the Lemur, choose any articulation (say, legato) with your left hand, and start playing. Tap on "staccato", and the sound will change automatically. You don't have to stop playing or anything else. Just select the articulation.

If you forgot to record the midi message at the start of your recording, you can - as for regular keyswitches - go back to the start of your sequence, press "record", and tap once on the right articulation. Here you go : you just sent a midi controller message to DP, and next time you play the sequence, you'll know for sure it uses the right articulation.

It's so great to see it in action. Not only is the Lemur a real beauty of its own, but it's allow fully customizable and programmable. *AND*, Kayla made it work with Digital Performer (and her system can work with any other sequencer). Waow.

Very cool stuff. Probably the best way I saw to use - easily! - the full power of the VI!

  • Oh, by the way, I thought you guys would like to know that the ProFire just came out today. Alleluia...

If anyone tries it, I'd love to hear any report (positive or negative) on this new interface!

    J.

  • Hey Jerome, Im going to New York on Wednesday and will buy or steal one and bring with me home. [:D] So I'll hopefully be back with some test results from my slave in a couple of weeks.

Oh, and that Lemur looks like one of my wet dreams! [H]

  • Hy Vagn Luv -- where are you from?

  • Copenhagen Denmark my friend. [:)]

  • What is the VAT over there? In France, it's about 20%. Everytime I go back for vacation, my friends and family ask me to bring back stuff. iPods, tennis rackets, shoes...

Last time I brought back my old Mac Mini and a 18" screen! No joking.

    [:D]

    Jerome

  • Heh, VAT is same here as in France, but also the fact that the Euro is currently strong against the dollar makes it very favorable to bring back nice fancy toys from the states. [[;)]]

  • Hey guys -- just wanted to say that if you were interested in the whole "Mac Minis as VSL Farms" concept, I've written three articles on the subject.

They are available on my (new) website, here : http://www.createfilmscores.net/?page_id=7">http://www.createfilmscores.net/?page_id=7

Please let me know your thoughts, comments and suggestions!

    Jerome

  • Thx Jerome, I have already been at ur site for the read. Great Lego StarWars movie. [[;)]]

All that remains for me now is to find a working KVM switch for the Minis, and think I have digged up every single brand and unit out there available. Problem is I dont know if they will work without flaws or if they will drop the VGA connection as reported. Any of you managed to find a purely DVI based one?

  • You can find DVI switches, but they're very expensive; buying two 4-port DVI switches is basically the price of a Mac Mini ! [*-)]

    J.

  • I can tell you about the IOGear 4-port Miniview SE that I used for a couple of years: it works really well with Mac and Windows. The only problem is that it switched horizontal and vertical ball-scrolling on the Mighty Mouse. I used it with a PC mouse that had a scroll wheel rather than a scroll ball.

  • So, here's the latest update on our setup. I consider it to be 95% finished now. Here's where we stand :

78 "instruments" / 872 articulations loaded at all time (about 18 GB of samples)

    No performance issues.

The setup is based on the following slaves: 8 Mac Minis (2 GB) and 2 Powermacs (4 GB)

    Jerome

  • Hey Jerome:

    Two questions:

    1. Do you have backup power "just in case"?

    2. What other considerations do you have for the remaining 5%?

    Cheers
    JWL

  • We have a backup Mac Mini in case one of them goes down. Also, the whole library is on an external, 750 GB hard drive, so that we can reinstall it quickly if needed.

The remaining 5% are for a small bug that I've been trying to fix for some time: notes are dropping off when being played the first time. They work fine after being played once. It only seems to happen on the Mac Minis where the samples are streamed off the hard-drive.... so I need to install an external hard drive and see if the problem still happen. Until this thing is fixed, I have to consider it's only 95% operational.
