  • Impressive Gentlemen.

    Guy,
Wonderful use of sound colour in your three pieces. Interesting that as a former orchestral W/W player (Clarinet, Bass Clarinet) i listened closely to the Caper, and found myself emulating the runs and glisses you used very well! Memories, lol.

    Jay,
again i find myself compelled to enjoy another of your performances. Like Guy, i enjoy listening to the Danse Profane regularly, and you captured that ethereal tonal spirit very well indeed. I've mentioned before my repsect for your abilities, and i confirm that now.

Christian, wonderful piece. 'Sleigh Bell' music can get terrible cliched, and you not only avoided this, but injected a fresh sound into a somewhat overdone genre. It's my opinion you have a sure and steady hand in orchestrative technique, and it shows.

My compliments and respects to the three of you,

    Alex.

That's a nice compliment considering I know nothing [:O]ops: about the technical aspects of the clarinet, I mainly went by instinct. So thanks!

    and thanks Jay! [:D]

  • Hi Guy

I have problems with your MP3 they are saturating !
I have no problems with other pieces !

Has anybody this problem ? or is it only me !

    Best

    Cyril

  • Hi there,

I did the mixes on Guy's demos; Please let me know what you mean by Saturating you mean like analogue distortion sound?

    Miklos.

  • Hi Miklos

Difficult to explain as English is not my mother thong !
If you look to the piece in Itunes's bargraf, you will see that some frequency bands are going very high
May be too much equalisation on some frequency bands ?
May be just a space reverb should be enough with VSL ? no other plug-ins !

  • Hi Guy.
Great job, compliments. What reverberb you have used ?
    Especially on Strato City 9.
    Thanks.

  • Cyril, Thanks for letting us know of the problem you are having. There is a possible explanation which is technically boring but I will get a new mp3 to the good people at VSL and will let you know when it is available for download.

If you care for the explaination essentially what I think has happened, although I could be wrong, is that the master file that I delivered has had a dithering and noise shaping process applied, and it is possible that in conversion to mp3 (which I did not do myself) it was noise shaped a second time by the mp3 process, which in some cases can result in extreme high frequency amplitude which is not audible to the human ear and this is done by processors to enhance perceived resolution when dithering. Essentially if the noise shaping is done twice on top of itself, it can result in this type of distortion. There may be a limiter in itunes that is kicking in even though these frequencies are not audible they are still distorting at some point in the spectrum and this is what is producing this audible saturation effect - simply a limiter even though the audible frequencies are not overloading. I've had this happen once or twice with mp3's and it can happen with any processors that do strange things to hi frequencies notably dithering processes and aural exciters, which sound fine until you encode to mp3 and then the fun starts.

    Miklos.

  • Bravo Guy Bacos !
you are a VSL master !
keep giving us great demo...it realy show the VSL power of orchestral emulation.

    Bravo !

I appreciate that comment Mephisto, thanks, although if I'm a "VSL master" [:O]ops:
you may add to that list the Jay's, Beat's, Christian's and others.

    Cool name! [6]

  • Cyril,

I hope you were now able to listen to the mp3 file without any problems - please let me know if it still doesn't work for you.

    Miklos.

  • sorry for not answering before, I was having a rest in Lyon

did you change the downloding path or is it the same ?

    A Springtime Caper
    http://www.vsl.co.at/Player2.aspx?Lang=13&DemoId=4902
a virtuos concertpiece for clarinet in a kind of zigane style

I have tried GB_A_Springtime_Caper-1, it still the same when the bass plays

  • What software are you using to play back the file? Have you tried using something else?

    I use Itunes on a Quad G5 with 8 GB [:)]

  • In that case, can you try either playing the file in your browser window, or right clicking the file and choosing "open with..../quicktime player" and try that, it might be itunes that is introducing the distortion.

I have tried with the Quicktime player and have imported the MP3 into Logic, no more problems !

    Very strange !

Playing with the equaliser, I got result quite ok reducing 32 hz to 1k bands to -6db

  • Try turning off the built in eq, and the sound enhancer? I forget the name of that - but you know what I mean - all "alteration" of itunes to the sound - turn that off. What is likely happening is that itunes has a software limiter there designed to perform a more analogue style saturation distortion when the digital signal goes over 0db, to stop end users experiencing clipping effects, - the mp3 file however is peaked at -0.2db I have checked it - no clipping on the file - so itunes is somehow getting it wrong there.

    no doubt !
but why only with your pieces ! this is strange. I have fw the problem to Itunes people

  • I had a theory above, but from what you said about dropping the low-mid range frequencies stopping the distortion, possibly proves it wrong, although who knows. Is it all the pieces or just that one? Did you also have the sound enhancer turned on? If so could you try it with the sound enhancer off and the eq off is it still a problem, and also try turning off the auto volume feature.

I have put "sound enhancer" to "off" ---> no more problems [:)]

    Tricky !
