  • VI sample rate conversion?

I was just wondering how VI (or even virtual instruments in general) handle sample rate conversion. I know that the VSL stuff (and most other sampled virtual instruments) is recorded at 44.1. If you're working in a session at say, 48k does the conversion happen at the VI level or in your sequencer? Are there artifacts? Color changes?

Most of my experience dealing with mixing live audio tracks, I definitely prefer working at 48k and since most of my delivery is for film and TV, my end product is going be 48k at some point. But for some of my new projects where I will be working primarily with virtual instruments that were originally sampled at 44.1, I wonder if there is really any advantage or even if it is a disadvantage because of the need at some level for the sounds to be resampled. Is working at 48k in a world of Virtual Instruments just unneccessary CPU drain?

    Thanks for any insight!!

  • I have the same issue, I'd like to know too.

  • Hi,
I changed my whole system from 44.1 to 48khz and there is no problem or colouring with VI or other Plugs. On older sessions, when I switch from 44.1 to 48 Logic just reloads the Instruments and voila´everything plays in 48 with no problems.
    Just try it...

  • thanks for the reply,

I know that it is possible, i've set up my system at 48 and everything seems to play fine, I'm just wondering if anyone has ever done any A-B testing to see if there is any sonic difference. The conversion has to be happening somewhere and I'd like to know if it's going on in the player, or in my sequencer (DP).

In a nutshell I was hoping someone else had done the dirty work of A-B'ing their virtual instruments at the two sample rates so I could avoid the time [:)]
I'm Trying to decide if working in 48 from start to finish has enough bonuses (plugin sound quality etc.) to warrant the all the samples being upconverted. And I also wanted to know if this upconversion is placing unneccessary strain on the CPU. (Is it doing the upconversion on the fly)

    Thanks

  • I'd also like to know the answer to that one.
