  • VI Problem in Logic 7.2.1

Having had mixed results with Logic's Freeze function....(some tracks like Ivory exhibited artifacts in them when frozen), I took someone's advice and have been using EXPORT TRACK AS AUDIO on all my instrument tracks. It seemed to be working fine, just as fast as freezing, until I got to 7.2.1 .

On a daily basis now, I'm having trouble similar to when I was freezing tracks. Some tracks drop out for a beat or two, or there is a huge spike (pop) that I have to redraw. Some nights, like tonight, even rebouncing (exporting) the track over and over doesn't solve the problem, the artifacts just show up in different places. I am particularly noticing this with VSL (Vienna Instrument) tracks. I don't seem to see the problem with STYLUS, ATMOSPHERE, TRILOGY, etc, though at the moment I couldn't swear it's never happened with them. I finally gave up tonight and just ran the VI's live without bouncing.

Has anyone had any experiences like this since the most recent upgrade? I am wondering if the kind folks at VSL might take a look at whether there is anything in VI that could cause this....

    Thanks
    Tom H

  • Will look into it.

  • I don't have an answer, but just wanted to confirm that bouncing "offline" doesn't work for me with my Vienna Instruments.

I haven't tried exporting or freezing, but the process is essentially the same as offline bouncing.

Only a realtime bounce works here.

    Hope they can address this...

  • ...me too..."offline bounce" from Logic make an audio file playng crazy......

  • I just want to be clear that I am not using the OFFLINE BOUNCE function.

I am using EXPORT TRACK AS AUDIO, which acts the same way, it's not in real time, and usually works great, saving the user from having to play through the entire song to commit an Instrument track to permanent audio....

    Thanks
    Tom

  • Thanks Tom. That's good to know... that the Export function, which IS an offline bounce, works.

Often times however, I will prefer to do an offline bounce of a buss, that has all my Vienna Instruments assigned to it. This creates an audio file of a submix. This action requires a bounce, not an export.

I hope they can figure out why one works, while the other doesn't. Because they're really the same thing. Perhaps it's having 2 or more Vienna Instruments playing simultaneously, that causes the bottle neck as far as offline bouncing goes...

Tom, what happens when you select "Export All Tracks as audio Files"? Doest he export still work then?

First let me restate everything. NOTHING is working. I use EXPORT TRACK TO AUDIO and am having problems. I ALSO have problems when I use FREEZE, I gave up using Freeze in the last version of Logic. So nothing right now is working consistently. SOMETIMES, EXPORT TRACK TO AUDIO does work, but I would say at least 50 per cent of the time my VSL tracks end up with artifacts in them, spikes, or a second or so of cut off audio. So FREEZING has never worked reliably for me, but in the last version of Logic EXPORT TRACK TO AUDIO did seem to work. It is with the latest Logic version that this feature has now become next to useless.

I think you may be onto something with the multiple VIs. Last night, when it just wouldn't work at all no matter how many times I tried it, I had about 6 VIs up, although of course I was only exporting ONE track at a time to audio. Maybe if I had only had ONE VI up it would have worked. Will explore this.

Oddly, I just did a 4 minute sales film and when I sent a rough to the editor I used OFFLINE BOUNCE for the whole song, and it worked fine, though in that case it was all audio audio tracks save for a very brief seven second area that had about three VIS (Trem VLNS, FL Leg and something else) going...

  • Hi all,

the freeze function doesn´t work properly sometimes, but this hasn´t anything to do with the VI, it is a Logic bug AFAIK. When playing back a freezed track it can happen that it starts to click randomly (so it must be an error of the playback function).

In a Logic project where 4 VI´s with different instruments loaded were opened, the freeze function worked fine for all tracks (despite these clicks).

"Export track as Audio" and and the bounce function worked both without any faults.

    Setup: G5 2.5 Dual / 4 GB RAM / Logic 7.2.1 / VI 1.06b

Last night it was so bad I just couldn't use it at all, even with just one VI doing a flute. MOST of the song was fine, but a few bars had clipped audio, that is, sound that was cut off abruptly.

I am seeing others having problems on the Logic forum as well, though not necessarily with VI, just bouncing in general.

I am really beginning to miss Pro Tools.

  • Do you have a chance to try DP 5?

I do own DP but haven't upgraded to 5.

Do you find it more solid than Logic for VSL?

    Thanks
    Tom

  • Both programs work fine here apart from this freeze-bug in Logic.
I am just interested if DP5 performs better in your case (it offers a freeze function too).

The problem with DP's freeze function is that it is in real time. The offline bouncing and freezing of Logic saves me tons of time...when it works.

I think one has to keep using the Export Track to Audio function to see the problem, because it works for me too, and then without warning, doesn't work at all some days without audio cut offs, etc. I am wondering whether it's a memory problem, I only have 2.5 g on a Dual G5 2 gig.
