  • Question re rel. merits: solo strings - standard v. extended

I'd be grateful for the favor of some advice.

I'm pretty keen to buy the standard version of the VI Solo Strings, but am unable to determine whether they make use of the Standard or Extended versions of the library. I think I'm hearing things that are only in the Extended version.

Is the Standard version adequate, in other words?

I see in reviewing the articulations list broken down by Standard vs. Extended that while the Standard column has just a few light notations, the Extended list is absolutely black with verbiage. It seems like a preponderance of the good stuff has been covetously reserved to the Extended library, with the Standard acting like a sales trailer.

Is that at all accurate? Could one hope to get a fully expressive performance with only the Standard version?

How can one explain the almost infuriatingly large difference between what's offered with the Standard version and the Extended? Shouldn't it be more like 1/2 and 1/2?

Am I out of my mind? I'm holding out that possibility. Please advise.

Sorry, I meant "am unable to determine whether the audio demos make use of the Standard or Extended ... etc.

Doubtless, "All the best, Beat Kaufmann," my website would also distress you: http://www.vogelscheiss.com. If so, I apologize. Would still be eager to hear answers actually directed to the actual subject of my posting. Danke.

"Unfortunately" for you (perhaps) most of the audio demos are made with both of the libraries. The demos - produced by by Christian Kardeis - show very often a single type of articulation which can exist in the Standard Library. But if the track ends with a diminuendo ... > extended library.
Jay's demos and those which I produced are using the whole possibilities of both Library-types.

Beat, thanks for the info as well as the kind and forbearing words. [:)]

I gather then that from your point of view the Extended version of the library would be nearly essential?

    Hi again
Yes! Check out the samples you will get with the standard- or the extended library... If we take the Soloviolin for example: Music without a crescendo? How to end a piece without a diminuendo? You can simulate it by fading out a sustained tone but it will not be the egg yolk...
    The link for comparing articulations:
http://www.vsl.co.at/en-us/211/344/217.vsl Choose then "Articulations" and do it for your favoured instrument too.
Another thing is if you want to use for example strings for background music or for creating some nice (legato-) runs.
So putting together: The use for more likely solo entrys > Extended- ... for background music you will be happy with the Standard- Library too.
But you know - the Standard-Library contains the Extended Library as well for checking out it some days and starts... don't do it... [[;)]]
    The sample story:
I started my "sample-career" with the X-sample libraries. Staccato and Sustained samples, two levels each type. Wow! Then I continued with Peter Siedlaczek's libraries > a new Wow..! Today I'am happy about every additional articulation... Disadvantage: The more samples the less money...

    Beat,

I'd failed to take note of your name having been associated with several of the best demos on the site. Really extremely impressive -- which makes your point of view as to the importance of having the Extended version extra persuasive. I'm now psychically preparing myself to say goodbye to a large sum of money. Goodbye, money! Enjoy your new home! Seriously, I expect I'll go for the Extended set sometime soon.

My understanding is that VI's samples are dry. May I ask what reverb you're using? Altiverb?

    Best,

    Best,
    --Chuck

Yes they are dry. The philosophy behind this fact is, that you are able to "put" your players in a room of your choice. I'm quite happy because I can place instruments very close to the listener (solo instruments) or on the other hand also far away (Brass, Organ...) Click: Different Depths(Handel playback). Currently I use Voxengo's PristineSpace and Gigapulse VST. But I'm not very happy with them. I'm eagerly waiting for Altiverb's Windows-Version. Again... money bye bye
