  • Velocity Xfade vs Cell Xfade

At the moment I am dealing entirely with strings, so the velocity Xfade is very handy, particularly on legato instruments. However, for the staccatos I am finding that I would prefer not to use Xfade, but stick with velocity layers.

The problem is that I seem only to be able to have Xfade enabled or disabled on a global basis per instance, rather than on a matrix (or even patch) level. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

So, my thought is that as there are only two dynamic levels of legato instrument, would it work if I loaded them up as Cell 1 and 2 and used Cell Xfade instead? Would I be able to make each Cell non-responsive to velocity changes? Any thoughts on this or a better way of achieving what I want?

  • If I understand your suggestion I dont think your suggestion would work. You would simply crossfade the patches and not the layers.

I'm in the exact same boat as you. I want to use velocity crossfades for long instruments and key velocity for short. I would like to be able to set it up on a cell to cell basis also. (Think I have suggested it somewhere)

  • Velocity Xfade is different to cell Xfade, the velocity xfade is a special crossfade and a volume control all in one, using special blend curves.

What you can do is switching the velocity crossfade on/off with any controller, so you can use xfade for some notes, and for the next note normal velocity.

  • Yes, this is just what I'm after. Hmmmmmmm, running out of controllers here. Where's VIC when you need it?

  • In spite of being able to switch it on and off, it would still be nice to have a 'per cell' option.

  • Yes, I was wondering about this myself. For example, I see that there are two "med" dynamic and several "str" dynamics available, but for adagio movements, these are a bit too dramatic. It would be nice to have a "recorded" decres (especially) that isn't so strong. Trying to go from a mf or mp to p is really tricky. Being able to edit each cell would really allow for this.

I would also hope that someday each matrix in a single console could be assigned its own midi channel to work in conjunction with PERFORM settings that could also be assigned independantly for each matrix. This would really be nice for setting up, for example, a violin 1 section with one matrix for "adagio", a second one for "andante", and third for "allegro", etc. The PERFORM settings I'm using as a benchmark for a more penetrating legato is about 80 for the release, but that doesn't work for the patches within other matrices within the same console. Currently, these are all being meticulously reset with a CC#.

To avoid too many CC conflicts, I've found it easier to just load additional consoles into different tracks with different edits and MIDI channel assignments to each. But it seems to be a waste not to make more of the flexibility of the matrices on one console. This is fine for now, but I wonder what will happen when the brass, harp and percussion volumes arrive. It will take some VERY clever matrix planning to accommodate a full orchestra. I'm sure it can be done, but it will require another layer of thought.
