  • Syncrosoft License Control Error

This has happened twice now. When loading a new instrument, I get a sudden prompt that says the following:

"Syncrosoft License Control -- Error. Application 'Vienna Instruments' has caused the following error: -> There is a USB communication problem. Please connect the protection device to another USB port.

"Options: - Click <OK> to abort."

Both times, I had been loading and playing without problems for a while. Both times happened when loading.

The worst part is, changing the key's USB port doesn't do anything. "OK" in the prompt is non-responsive. I can only Force Quit Logic -- Syncrosoft and the VI plug-in stay on screen. So it's a total beach ball crash, and I need to power down my entire computer to clear the screen.

I had one other crash while attempting to load, but there was no Syncrosoft prompt.

My Syncrosoft is on a USB hub. I'll put it directly into the G5 and see if this continues.

OSX 10.4.4, Logic 7.1.1, G4 1.8 dual. External LaCie 250GB hard drive for samples.

  • hi plowman,

...have had still the same problem as you!

    fixed it by:

    1. repairing HD permissions
    2. deleted the apps.- and preferences data of vienna instruments (library/preferences panes) and licence control center
    3. deleted the VI component (library/audio/plugins/component)
    4. moved the logic prefenrences data (users/library/preferences ...) to an other place to force logic open a default song (maybe you have to move you autoload song too)
    5. reinstalled the licence control center (see VI - update page!)
    6. reinstalled vienna instruments application (see VI - update page!)

i´m not quite shure which of the operations was succesfull, but after that string of
"cleaning" evrything is working - very slow in loading, but it works!

    best, thomas

  • I really appreciate this, thomas. I've yet to experience another crash with the USB plugged directly into the G5. But if I crash again, I'll consult your list and see what I can manage.

In fact, if I run without crashing, I'll pick a low-risk session, plug the key back into the hub and see if it happens again. Blaming the hub seems a little cyberstitious. I usually run my Unitor through the hub, and one would think that requires more than a passive key. Your fix sounds more organic.

  • some general thoughts to USB, hubs and MIDI ... did it never happen to you that a USB connected MIDI interface lost its connection to the application (besides others also Unitors connected directly and not even via a hub)?
we noticed that such often, that we finally moved everything to MIDIoverLAN, because the connection could only be re-established through a reboot.
possibly the key is more sensitive to tiny dropouts than a MIDI interface ... i know not much help, but i would be interested to hear your experiences.

it also could be related to have connected other types of devices (besides computer-keyboard and mouse) like harddisks, bluetooth, USB-modems, USB-audio devices, ect - i'd try to connect the key to the same port (resp. controller) as keyboard and/or mouse if you have the choice
