  • Synchron Harp update 1.3.471 makes it very quiet

After update to Synchron Harp 1.3.471 harp is nearly inaudible (Dorico Pro 5 projects). I do not know the reason, as no changes were made in Dorico, update also messed up older project using that harp. I fixed my latest project to handle the new dynamics (settings in GUI did not help at all) by adjusting all harp velocities. Lot of work as simply raising the values together was not good as the curve seems to be very logarithmic.

It looks to me as dynamics setting is forced at 200 regardless of the GUI setting (I use about 100-110).

How can I revert Synchron Harp to the previous version?

  • I notice the same in Mir Pro, volume was very low

  • Hi! Are specific notes, mic positions, and playing techniques affected by your machines? What is your reproduction scenario?

  • All software, setups and hardware have remained the same, only variable that has changed is updated harp version.

I use Dorico Pro 5.1 (latest) with Steinberg UR 22 C. Very high-end PC, Window 10 Pro.

  • I have also noticed this since the update. While I do realize that the harp is a generally quiet instrument in comparison to the rest of the orchestra, even with the volume turned fully up on both Dorico (Dorico Pro 5) and within the Harp Player itself, I can still barely hear it.

I don't own the harp library, but actually the same applies to all instruments if you want to make them louder.

    The 3 most important possibilities:
    1. increase the master fader slightly for a little more volume.
    2. increase CC07. Please also check in the "Perform" window whether CC11 is trimmed high enough. If you do not control CC11 separately, you can set "127" there.
    3. if none of the above helps, you can add a limiter effect to each of the active microphones in the MIX window under FX. We are not using the actual limiter, but only the ability to amplify the signal. Set a value between +6dB and perhaps +12dB under "Makup". You can also use any other plug-in that allows you to change the pure volume without the respective effect.

    That should help.

Thank you Beat for your detailed response. I 100% follow you, and I understand exactly what you are saying. Your instructions a good quick fix for the issue. I guess going back to the original question, I am still unsure as to why "all of the sudden" is the hap extremely quiet after the update? I purchased the Synchron Harp when it first came out, and even then, yes it was more quiet then most other Synchron/synchron-ized instruments; understandably because the harp in general is a softer instrument then most other orchestral instruments. However I did notice since the 1.3.471 update, the instrument is almost completely inaudible, even when playing solo. I find this to be true in the stand alone harp player, when ran through a DAW (Logic Pro), and Dorico. Even when following your suggestion (and maxing out the volume) it is still incredibly quiet. And it is ONLY the Synchron Harp that I find has this issue.

For background, I have every single Vienna Instrument, All Synchron-ized instruments, and all Synchron instruments (expect one Piano). The original Vienna Harp's (played through VI PRO) and the Synchron-ized harps are substantially louder then the actual "Synchron Harp". I find that so odd since the Synchron Harp is the newest and in a way, the current "flagship" harp. I only use VSL instruments so the issue isn't VSL Synchron harp being played against other 3rd part instruments that are much louder naturally.

I feel as though ether I am doing something wrong/not understanding something, or something is wrong with the player itself (since it seemed to be a bit louder prior to the update.

None of what I am saying is by any means meant to come across as complaining or a slam on you or VSL. I am genuinely trying to understand.

  • Update,

I ended up emailing VSL Support. We are NOT crazy! There is a known issue, specifically with the synchron harp player that is causing it’s volume to be substantially lower than it should.

It is currently being worked on, however it is taking vigorous testing to even find what the issue is. It might be a bit Before we see an updated version that corrects it, as there is so many other projects going on and only so much time in a day.

in the meantime, in the Vienna assistant, You can go to the harp player and re-download the retro version (before this update) which didn’t experience this problem, which should work just fine.

just thought I would circle back with some updated information.

  • Thank you for relaying that @KevPo.

  • Great, I need to try that, but now there will be a problem: pieces done with old version and pieces done with new (velocity-challenged). I old version is used on new version pieces, the velocities will be wrong?

Can new and old version be loaded separately?

Hi everyone! Good news: We have tracked down the Synchron Harp Player issue, and internal tests show that the fix does indeed solve the volume issue. We will prepare an update via the Vienna Assistant later this week.

    Best regards,
    Andreas
