Hi. Do you know what ms is? Use LR. MS is something altogther different and will probably give you only one side of the stereo image. It is a system used in recording and playback of recording where, instead of using two microphones to record the left and right of a stereo image, one directional (cardioid) microphone is used along with a figure of 8 mic side on... if anyone is interested, i can elaborate further. For now I will not waste anyone's time. The MS option I think you are referring to enables you to correctly decode a MS recording and is of no use to a VSL user. Stick to LR.
In terms of your orchestra, it is largely a matter of taste. I generally go v1 L30-45, v2 L15-25 etc. I use woodwind in mono not stereo and then place them accordingly. You can get your own settings by something as simple as looking at a diagram in most music dictionaries or even kids school books. The width of stereo is sometimes dictated by the project itself and the size of band. When I am preparing tracks for a singer, I leave more of a gap in the centre of the stereo image to allow the voice to come over with less competition sonically and in terms of frequency.
Experiment! Free the mind! Be original! Have fun!
