  • "Synchron Library Installer" is ridiculously, brokenly slow

First, I downloaded all the Synchron strings files. Then I opened the package.info file for 1st Violins in Synchron Library Installer, selected a directory on my SSD, and started installing. The progress bar chugged along at 1% per 2 seconds until it hit 11%... and then it stopped. No more progress. And I have no idea why. The disk is not full. There is no error message. It's all taking place on a very fast Samsung SSD. There's no clear explanation for why this is happening. I retried several times, always with the same result. It hangs at 11%. I've tried with the 2nd violions and violas... same thing. I assume this applies to all the Synchron libraries.

After retrying many more times and always quitting after it gets stuck at 11%, I decided to try leaving the installer running overnight. In the morning, it had reached 85%. But I had to cancel anyway because I needed to leave the house with my laptop. And going through a 12 hour+ install for each library is ridiculous and shouldn't be necessary, so I don't consider this a solution.

My computer is a mid 2014 Macbook Pro running Mojave, connected to a 2 TB Samsung SSD. All Vienna software is the latest. However, I've tried installing from and to other drives (HDDs) and the result is the same. And I suspect the problem runs even deeper, as I also ran into the same thing on an iMac running High Sierra back in the summer. At the time I thought it was a one time glitch, but now I realize that I need a solution or I won't be able to use the Synchron strings I bought.

Anyone else deal with this? Please help!

  • +1 I have exactly the same problem!

I've only tried installing the 1st Violins so far and the progress goes smoothly until 12%

It's been installing since 05:00 this morning (12 hours!!) and it's only on 20%

    It's installing onto a Samsung T5 1TB

    Hope someone has a fix!

  • Hi,

We believe this could be caused by a wrong data format (ExFAT) of your harddrives. On macOS, please make sure that your SSD drive is macOS-formatted.

  • I don’t think that’s it, because it happens even when I try installing from and to a Mac OS (journaled extended) volume.

  • Hi clamnectar,

Could there be an AV program in the way, slowing down the installation process?

  • After trying different things--- it turns out that installing from one drive to another is just as problematic as installing to an exfat-formatted drive. You have to have the installation files on the same drive they're being installed to. So that's how I solved it.

  • Hi clamnectar,

    Thanks for posting your solution.

Whichi drive did you use to store your installation files on, and which connection did you use?

I have not had any troubles installing from a 7200 rpm harddrive until now, connected via SATA...

  • Hi folks,

just want to say, I had the same issue with ultra long istalling duration and I fixed it with disabling the virusscanner for the source and destination folder of the instalation.

After that my Epic Ochestra 2.0 installation was finished after 11 minutes ;)

    Hope that helps.

    Regards
    Andreas

  • I'm having this installation problem with Synchronized Chamber Strings.

The download files are on the destination disk, a Samsung T5 1TB which has ample room, and I've disabled all antivirus apps.

The installation hangs at 33% for about an hour, then clicks to 34, and stays there for...I don't know how long, but so far 8 hours.

    Thanks for your time,

    Clare

  • Hi Clare,

Could it be that your Samsung T5 is formatted as ExFat? Please format it as NTFS (WIN) or macOS (Mac) and installation will work fine.

  • You're right, it's ExFat. It was working so well with my library I assumed everything was correct. Thanks.

  • Thanks Paul, It’s all installed now, but the articulations aren’t changing properly yet (stuck on pizz). I’ve done this a few times now, my solo strings, dimension strings etc, so I think I understand the Sibelius/soundest process generally. Two simple questions. Should synchron player be appearing in the Sibelius devices list, or do I select Vienna ensemble and open synchron within that ( which is what I’ve done)? In the add/change instruments I am using dimension strings instruments, I can’t see any synchronised dimension strings instruments in the list. Is that correct? Thanks Barton.

  • Hello Barton!

In Sibelius I recommend adding Vienna Ensemble. You can load Synchron Player inside Vienna Ensemble.

For SYNCHRON-ized Dimension Strings, please add instruments from the Sibelius "Add or Remove Instruments" menu with “[VSL Dimension Strings I]” at the end and programs on the Manual Sound Sets page with “SYzd Dimension” at the beginning of the name. If you are unsure what to load for the "VE Strings" sound set, you can always check in the "Optimizing Sibelius Playback" manual at the beginning of the "VE Strings" chapter.

You can find more possible reasons and solutions for your problem in the Troubleshooting chapter.

  • I think my challenge is then that I can’t see any SYzd instruments in any of the Sibelius lists - not in change instruments or manual assignment Cheers, Barton.

  • Hi Barton,

Our Sibelius specialist Andreas is on his well-earned holiday right now, but if you send us a few screenshots that show the essentials of installation as shown in the Sibelius manual, we can probably find out what's going on: support@vsl.co.at

  • Cool - I can do it soon

  • Hello all,

I just installed the whole Synchron package from the official VSL Synchron hard drive, and it took my computer more than 27 hours.

    • iMac Pro – macOS 10.5.2 – 3 GHz 10-core Intel Xeon W – 64 GB RAM
    • Destination drive: 4 GB Samsung 860 QVO, formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled), connected by Thunderbolt 3
    • No anti-virus software whatsoever
    • No other applications running

During the whole installation process, only one of the 10 cores showed an utilisation of 10–15 %, the other cores were completely idle.

So I think there is still room for improvement...

    All the best

    Pierre Funck

  • Hi Pierre,

Shouldn't take that long. How was the Synchron HD connected? Could it be that you were using USB 2?
