  • Purely from a listener's perspective I'm struggling with this one. I enjoyed the second listen more than the first so it may grow on me with time, but I found it overly complex for my humble ears. There are so many stylistic changes in such a short time, not a lot of dynamic variation and quite a rigid, metronomic feel (which may be intended of course). I was only listening on a Powerbook, but the balance seemed good so no obvious problems there.

Some contextual information may be useful here, as it comes across as maybe being written to a cartoon sequence or something - for which it may work very well - but I wouldn't sit down and relax to this sort of music of an evening!

If it helps I enjoyed the second, percussive section most and the piece does demonstrate a degree of talent, it's just not for me. Maybe someone who's more familiar with this sort of music could give you some more productive compositional views.

Thanks for the opportunity to listen though, it's always good to hear what everyone is up to.

  • Thanks for listening, and for your apt comments. It was my intention to have a very fragmentary, surprising introduction (the first 40 seconds) leading to a more economical main section (the remaining 6 minutes). You, it seems, found the introduction too scattered and didn't hear it as an introduction? Also, with only half of the piece recorded then, the balance was not yet right. Draft version of the whole now posted; some audible errors still in the latter half.

I'll keep working on dynamic contrasts, that seems always a problem with samples-based demo recordings. Even at the beginning, the score shows a range from fff to pp, so there should be more contrast!

For this recording, I started from an automatically generated midi derived from the score (made in the Score notation program and turned into midi by a program called Scoremid) -- so much of the recording/editing is to re-humanize things.

  • Well, Guglielmo, I am one who enjoys challenging listens... I found the piece to be quite 'circus-like' in character. Nice, upbeat, cheerful.
The opening I found the most interesting, and it did sound like an introduction to me. The changes however could be either more abrubt or 'announced' (are you familiar with the music of Jerry Goldsmith? He was a master in making transitions - no matter how abrubt they'd seem; always were they perfectly 'announced').

The second main part, with more percussion, evokes the circus feeling even more. Circus, or those fairs (don't know how they're called in english, in Dutch we say 'kermis') where people come for the caroussel and various rides. It also has quite an 60s/70s Italian feeling. Not really Nino Rota but the atmosphere is there.

Overall, I find it an interesting piece, which maybe looses some focus in the first main part.

  • Wow, you've been working hard on this. I couldn't do a direct comparison to your first mix, as it's obviously been replaced by the new one, but I can now hear where the piece is going. Having initially identified little wrong with the mix, I can now hear the lead voices more prominently which has really helped.

I almost asked before if the parts where created from a scoring program, it really sounded like it, but the 'mechanical' feel of the original post has also been improved somewhat. I'd still like to hear more 'ramping' of the tempo in places to create a more conducted performance, but this could screw up your articulations now.

IMO the strings are the biggest problem at this stage. There are still a few places where they are mixed too loud when playing a supporting role, therefore masking or muddying the melody. I think they would also benefit from being layered with the Solo or Chamber strings for a more gritty, zingy, lively sound, but maybe you don't have access to these - perhaps take a look at the EQ again?

Much improved all round though, it was worth the effort! [:)]

And I really didn't mean to sound so negative in my first post (I've just read it again) it's just the way it comes out sometimes [:O]ops: - it's always much easier to find fault with something than to pinpoint what's good, sorry!

    Colin

  • I appreciate it that you returned for another listen, Colin. The strings are getting steadily clearer, hopefully, as I work through the recording from beginning to end. They ARE solo strings, with some GOS strings in unison and slightly less prominent.

  • Full recording now posted, links above, and 16 of the 24 pages in pdf:
