  • Need Help!: Hardware for Symphonic Cube template

    Hi VSL Support and Users,

I'm trying to create a new VSL template that contains all the patches from the Symphonic Cube (Full). The way I approach is to separate the articulations of one instrument into 8-13 tracks (for example, Flute 1 Short, Flute 1 Long, Flute 1 Dynamics, Flute 1 Accents, Flute 1 Trills, and so on) and fit all the tracks in one VE Pro stereo output instance (called Flute 1). I activate only the first articulation of each track, say only Staccato in Flute Short, but having Portamento_short (etc.) deactivated in the next cell, just to save my RAM. Then I route that particular output through MIR Pro for panning and reverberation.

Now I've come to the point where I have 385 tracks in Logic Pro X (from 32 Multitimbral VE Pros) laid down and I'm beginning to notice that CPU load is pretty high and my Macbook fan is being very noisy. I both increased I/O buffer size in Logic Pro to 1024 (maximum) and the buffer size in each VE Pro instance to 4 buffers (maximum). That only helps reducing CPU load from 100%x4 cores, to 70%x4 cores. Just to add on, that 385 tracks only include Woodwind and Brass solos/ensembles, no strings library have been put into the template at the moment.

The question is, is there still any way to reduce my CPU workload? If not, then I'll have to consider either getting a better Mac (since I only work in Logic Pro) or upgrading to Master-Slave configuration. I'm also wondering would it help if I get a slave PC with better 6/8 core CPU, or would it not make any big difference at all as long as my Master Mac is still the same Macbook Pro.

For your information, my set up contains Macbook Pro 15" (Mid 2015), Samsung T1 SSD 500GB USB3.0 (VSL Drive), one Full-HD Screen (HDMI), and a NAD D1050 Digital-Analog Converter.

    Any help/suggestion is much appreciated!

    385 Tracks just a Macbook...?

I don't know which music you want to compose and whether you want to load always your 385 tracks or not. Also keep in mind that when it comes to reload such a project in 2019 or 2020 that probably nothing more will work properly (libraries are on an other harddisk, you bought another MacBook...).

So it is nice always to have the whole orchestra handy but if you only use a small strings-section and some woodwinds it is probably not a good idea always to save the whole rest of the orchestra with this small project. OK - it is your decision.

An idea could be to build groups or sections - to split up your template. Always within a VE. So sections could be..

    • the appassionatas
    • the chamberstrings
    • the solostrings
    • the woodwinds (ensemble)
    • the woodwinds (solo instruments)
    • the brass section (ensemble)
    • the brass section (solo instruments)
    • small percussion section
    • evrything percussion section...
    • ...

Example (every color is a VE instance...)

If you split up your template this way you are able only to use the sections you need for a certain project. Nevertheless it will not take a lot of time to build your orchestra for a certain new project. Just load the 2-4 VEs and voilà your orchestra is ready. If you like you can save your sections once within a small hall and once in a large venue... Keep also in mind that every missing instrument can be added without a lot of time. So every project will be saved with only the used instruments and you do not use a lot of time the build every wished "orchestra collection". Further you do not have to switch on your Macbook early in the morning for being able to play your orchestra in the afternoon... 😉

    Just another matter:

Do you really want to use a track for each articulation? I believe you will have a better overview this way: http://www.beat-kaufmann.com/images/midivieditorkeysw_600.jpg ... and also: If there are same music patterns you just can copy the keyswitches and voilà it is OK for all the same sequences - have a look here: http://www.beat-kaufmann.com/images/cre_pag_velocity_articulation.jpg ...which sounds this way...

    All the best
