  • Re-panning for compatibility reasons

    Hello!

A (desperate) question to the audio engineers out there.

I am using MIRx, which only features German seating positions for the strings (Vln1 - Vla - Db(rear) - Vc - Vln2).
Assume now that I want to blend in another library, which was recored in position and American in that (Vln1 - Vln2 - Vla - Vc - Db).

Is it possible to use a stereo manipulation tool like VSL's Power Pan or Flux' Stereo Tool to "re-pan" the MIRx-ed signal or the other library's signal to fit the respective other one?

My trains of thoughts, which you might want to pick up in your thankfully appreciated feedback:

    1. Minor changes should not be a problem, but moving, e.g., Vln2 from the far right to left-of-the-center...? Does it mess with the recorded/computed reflections or is this exactly what such a panning tool is able to achieve?
    2. If adapting the library recorded in position (and not the MIRx-ed signal): Should I just use the closest mics available, in order to avoid problems (if there are?) with the recorded reflections/reverb? This would demand additional reverb treatment then.
    3. If the answer is "Immmposssibrrrlllee!", my only option would be to refrain from using MIRx for the strings and use them with extra reverb and panning treatment instead, I guess?

    Your expertise is highly appreciated!

    Thank you and good night,
    Lukas

  • Of course you can try to adapt MIRx' output for your needs. Straight-forward changes - like swapping left and right channel - will not do any harm to its sound. You might also get away with some M/S-based panning (or rather: rotation), using tools like Vienna Suite Pro's "Power Pan Pro" and "Imager Pro", or Waves' "S1". But chances are that you run into the limits of "baked-in" stage positioning sooner or later (from both ends, that is).

.... the actual answer is called MIR Pro, which would allow for the free positioning of any signal on one of its Venues' stages, even when used in "MIRx Mode": You would start with the settings you're used to from MIRx and adapt them accoding to your needs (... try to do that with "baked-in reverb ;-) ...).

    Kind regards,

    Hello Dietz!

Swapping channels might work for the violins, but I'll just fiddle around a bit... In the "worst" case scenario, I'll pan/reverb the VSL strings by hand to adapt them to the library with baked-in reverb. And let some trained ears listen to the results to tell me whether they are okay or not.

Haha, of course it is. ðŸ˜› But it's beyond my means and level for now.

    Kind regards,

Is there a special reason you didn't list the "Stereo Tool" I mentioned?

Yes, a quite simple one: I don't know it!  ðŸŽ‰

  • Well the answers doesn't always have to be complicated... :D
