  • trills playback in Sibelius

I'm using the Vienna SE with the plus extension pack for the strings only. I have also added two extra presets in the lines menu to cope with these. The trills in strings play back correctly

What I completely fail to understand is that using the standard Sibelius trill line which I have not edited, non-strings will not play a "fake" trill as before with settings "If no matching sound available" set to "play trill". It simply ignores the instruction and just plays the note. This has happened only since I changed to the Vienna SE + soundset. Using the standard Vienna SE soundset, everything is as expected.

The house style is a slightly modified version of the one supplied  but using the default house style (from the "needful things" page) the result is the same. (As an aside I have spent some time trying to get appropriate dynamic graduations using the SE and dynamic markings in Sibelius only, but this is another matter -- I hope really decent playback will finally be achieved when Steinberg introduce a proper scoring module into Cubase written by the ex Sib guys so we have the best of all worlds -- good notation software with first class MIDI/audio control of the best sound library on the market)

Can anyone shed some light on this?

  • Hello David!

In your case you will need a Vienna Ensemble instance with the Special Edition PLUS sound set for the Strings and a second Vienna Ensemble instance with the Special Edition sound set for the other instruments.

    I hope this helps.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • of course --- I had both instances set up (one of wind+brass and one for strings+percussion) but had a complete blind spot to actually remembering to change the soundset for the first one in Sibelius which was the obvious final step. What an idiot! At the back of my mind I think must have been that the plus soundset was just the normal one with additions so could be used for everything but clearly it doesn't work like that.

    Thanks again Andi.
