  • Paging Guy Bacos: Vertigo Demo

    Hi Guy...

A quick (but delicate) question re. the D/S demo.

How much time did you spend on that? It's great... as are all your demos, but it seems like in a number of places where there s.b. natural 'swells', (basically every phrase!) the dynamics are a little... well... flat. I'm not picking on you... I'm just trying to get a sense of whether it's the lib... or if you just didn't have the time to add all those little details. I'm guessing it's the latter as there are also a number of places where I'd expect more of a 'breath' between phrases and I know -those- can take a while to program as well.

BTW: I commend you on your decision to do this selection---it really shows off the the 'humanity' of the lib.

Also: can you comment on the kind of machine(s) you used to do this? I'm really curious about the horsepower requirements. I have a 'slave' machine, but it's far from state of the art.

    TIA

  • You can't blame Guy for that, since I did the demo.  Yeah, the swells could have more exaggerated dynamics, probably.

That was done on an i7 920 machine with 24 gb of RAM, so it was fairly small horsepower.

  • Hmmm...

I coulda sworn the credit said Guy. Apologies for not giving proper credit. Regardless---'blame' isn't the word I'd use; it's quite impressive.

I was just wondering because I know that theme back and forward and it's a -brave- choice for anyone to mock up because it is so expressive

To my mind, it's those subtle little 'swells' that humans do -automatically- that are so tough for samples. If you're conducting you don't have to do -anything-... in fact, my experience is just the reverse: you have to actively reign in good players if you want a 'flat' sound.

So... you're saying the machine you used (i920, 24gb RAM) is somewhat -underpowered-? If so, what would you consider to be a machine that would be truly up to the challenge of DS (plus some other VIs)? I'm trying to get the -real- cost of using D/S... including any new hardware.

    Best,
