  • Another Noob VEP Question: Dedicated Remote Controller?

As I've ranted a lot here, my big frustration with VEP is having to dedicate a display to VEP because it doesn't run inside Cubase in Windows. So I lose track of keyswitches. It may just be coincidence, but I was about to write this when I saw the post about the iPad app.

Maybe that's the way to go, but perhaps there is another way to skin the cat.

Is there a way to put add a -dedicated- keypad or keyboard or -some- device to my computer which I could use to control VEP and VI Pro but would be ignored by Cubase?

I imagine like one of those 10 key USB pads. I could use it to select instruments in VEP and then activate keyswitches without having to leave Cubase as my active 'window'.

If I could 'control' VEP and VI indepently of working in Cubase I would be REALLY HAPPY. But all the MIDI devices I've seen seem to be 'global'... ie... they send their 'signal' only to the currently active program.

    Ideas?

    TIA,

    ---JC

  • Anyone?

  • Suntower,

As far as I know, VEP 5 doesn't run in Cubase, Pro Tools, Logic, Nuendo, or any other DAW.

So one would think most of us should face the same desktop real estate issue you face.

Perhaps you should be asking how others manage this.

You list 2 computers, in theory those computers can run several monitors each. How many monitors do you have?

    Hi Suntower,

Did you check out the "MIDI Activity Focus" button in VE PRO yet (to the left of the "Preserve" icon). It lets you switch to a specific instrument if MIDI is received on this channel only.

Also see page 23 of the VE PRO 5 manual.

    Best,

    Paul

  • @Paul... thanks. I'll give it a shot.

RE: separate displays: I used to have 3 23" displays. I dropped to 2 because... and this may sound nuts, but the sheer width was messing up my monitoring.... blocked the sound field. 2 displays works well with Cubase. The  3rd display would only be for VEP. My issue with VEP is because VEP -is- a separate EXE. So when I switch to it, Cubase goes away. Which I hate.

I think having VEP running in a tablet next to my MIDI controller would be good since I basically use VEP as an extension of my MIDI keyboard and -not- so much as a 'mixer'. I just want to be able to look control VEP  -without- taking my eyes off Cubase.

Heck I don't need a 'tablet'. I'd settle for some other gizmo like the Steinberg CMCs or a 10-key pad---again--thatou would let me navigate VEP without losing focus on Cubase.
