  • Advice on VE Pro 5 and Cubase Mixing procedure

Hello dear colleagues, I've spent a good deal over two hours looking for the following information with no luck. I'm at the final stage of a project and it's my first time doing my own mix and I don't quite know how to proceed:

1.- First I thought it would be easier to convert the MIDI tracks to audio tracks, which would give me the possibility of just mixing from Cubase's mixer and also the ability of taking advantage of automation. Couldn't find a way to do this in one go i.e. not having to do it one track at a time.

2.- So consequently I tried to control VEP 5 with cubase's automation. No luck there. I'm sure this was supposed to be possible with the new VEP 5 or maybe I'm just not getting it.

So my specific questions would be:

Is it easier to mix from VEP 5 or from Cubase's mixer? Mind you, I have no experience with either so both ways are new to me.

1.- If the answer is cubase, then does anybody know how to convert 23 different MIDI instruments to audio in Cubase? I've already set each instrument to a different output channel in VEP 5, I just don't know how to route it back to cubase and record it.

2.- If the answer is VEP 5, how can I automate the sliders, effects, panning from cubase?

    I appreciate any help!

    C.

  • Nobody?

  •  Many ways to do this. However, some of them depend on which version of Cubase you are using.

One way is to route all your VSTi Outputs to dummy outputs (created in VST connections, but not connected to anything) and then to create audio tracks and set the inputs to be the dummy outputs you just created. That way you can record the VSTi Outputs by record enabling the audio tracks and pressing record. It has to be done in real time, but 1 pass will record all of your VSTi Outputs to audio tracks.

  • Fantastic! Thank you very much! For others (as technologically challenged as me) that might come around this thread I'll put the procedure in detali below:

-In Cubase: Go to devices > VST Connections > Out tab. Create as many outputs as needed and you can also name them

-In VEP: At the bottom of every channel strip assign the output where you want to send the instrument (tip: if you select all channels press Alt, whilst clicking on the output channel, and it will will assign all outputs in incremental numbers e.g. first channel will be output 1/2, second channel will be 3/4, etc.

-Back to Cubase: in the main window right click any track and select creat audio channel, an option box will appear where it gives you the option of how many new tracks to create (create as many as you need e.g. the amount of instruments you have in VEP). Press enter and you can name them if you need it.

-Open the mixer (F3), as with VEP you can select all the audio channels and click on the top where it says input (it's the first row not the second, the second is output). Whilst pressing Shift (instead of Alt in VEP) select the audio outputs you created and it will assign it incrementally as well.

    - Back to main window, select all the audio channels and press record on top.... See the magic happen!

    - Now you can turn off VEP and all VST instruments and just work on the audio tracks in Cubase.

If anybody finds an error please let me know and I'll edit it....

  •  Hi . I use entirely midi tracks.  I mix these in Cubase 5 & 6 using the Stereo Outputs, not converting to audio. Gives me both worlds and leaves the midi open for any ongoing tweaks. I was pointed to this by a Cubase beta tester who states with midi he believes this IS the way Cubase should be used.

  • Yes, it does make sense and this is what I tried first. But I couldn't get Cubase to control automation parameters in VEP. And just in case I also need to automate effects I just went for transferring everything to Cubase. That way I don't have to deal with two softwares (or manuals) at the same time. Mind you, this is for the mixing stage of the production, the first stage of "raw mix" I did it with VEP. So I'm just talking about final mix and mastering.

    Thanks for your input!
