  • trills in appassionata

    Hi all,

I am just trying out everything in my new appassionata bundle and I do not understand how to get trills e.g. in VI-20_perf-trill_leg. It is just a continuous steadfast tone. I must be doing something very stupid but I cannot figure it out.

    Thanks for any pointers, Bob.

  • The reason it's called Performance trill is that you have to perform it. So, play a trill and you'll hear one. Play one note, and you'll hear one note.

  • Thanks DG, I rather suspected something like that.

I have up to now only worked with the special edition where things are straightforward, with appassionata I still have a lot of questions, the answers to which I could not find in the manual. Some are probably very obvious (if you know it :-)) so please bear with me.

    1. VI-20_perf-leg_Vib-strong, VI-20_perf-leg_Vib-progr: I hear no vibrato, no difference, does the perf again refer to performing it, and how do you do that on a keyboard?

    2. What precisely do the terms interval, interval performance, and alternation refer to: again I was unable to find a precise definition of these terms in the manual. I have a pretty good guess of course but I would like to have it confirmed. More precisely what do

    VI-20_perf-rep_leg and VI-20_perf-rep_por stand for?

Sorry for these silly questions. Cheers, Bob.

    1.  The vibrato is recorded with the samples. Strong just means that it have a more lively vibrato than normal.
    2. Interval in VSL usually means that the connection between two notes has been sampled, so when you play 2 notes legato you get a start note , the transition between notes and then the destination note. With the App Strings you can hear this most easily with the portamento patches. I would need to know context of the other terms in order to explain correctly.
    3. rep is always repetition, so leg rep would mean that the repeated notes are played with as small a gap as possible between them. Por stands for Portato.

  • Once again, thanks DG.

If the vibrato is recorded with the samples then I suppose I should hear it by just playing a note. But I don't, VI-20 perf-leg_Vib-strong  sounds exactly the same as VI-20_perf-legato and sounds exactly the same as VI-20_perf-leg_Vib-progr. There is to my hearing no difference between those 3 samples.

    Cheers, Bob.

PS I realize that this is now more for the vienna library section, maybe it should be moved.

  •  Obviously I can't be help resopinsible fro what you can and can't hear. [;)]

  •  I can't be held responsible for what you can and cannot hear...! [;)]

However, I've just loaded up all these patches. The difference between Perf-Leg and Perf-Leg string is very subtle, but it is there. The progressive vibrato is more obvious. If you listen to the start of a note and then 4 seconds in, the sound is much more alive. Maybe a good idea is to record a note to audio, and then you can shuttle back and forwards a number of times until you really hear the difference.

  • [:$] I hear it now too, I guess I just was not letting the notes play long enough, but having said that it is indeed very subtle, and to call that strong is a bit confusing [:)]

    Thanks DG!

Glad that you hear it now. I agree that there is not much difference, but to my ears the problem, if it is a problem, is that the normal Perf Leg patch already has quite a strong vibrato, so maybe they should be named Strong and Even Stronger. [:D]
