  • [SOLVED] Kontakt 4 is unusable inside DAW when using MIR

I am sorry if this fix has been posted but I read all the Kontakt 4 and MIR issue threads and it didn't resolve my issue.

I want to run Kontakt 4 as a plug-in as a seperate track inside my DAW as well as run MIR outside of my DAW at the same time (to layer instruments).  If I close MIR and insert a channel in my DAW for Kontakt 4 it works perfectly.  If I open MIR and load instruments in it, setup a channel in my DAW and send it out through LoopBe it works perfectly.  However, now that MIR is open in the background, none of my Kontakt 4 plug-in tracks work anymore.  They lag, pop and click and are completely unusable.  The second I close MIR it works perfectly again so I know it's a definite conflict of the two somehow.

Does anyone know how to set this up to make this work please?  I do not want to run Kontakt 4 inside of MIR because it pans my already pre-panned Kontakt instruments.  I tried putting a Kontakt track inside of MIR and it works, but the panning messes it all up.  I tried doing "direct" and it still affects the panning of the instrument.  If there is a way to put my Kontakt 4 plugs inside of MIR and have them be 100% completely unaffected by any MIR settings (mostly PAN) that would work also.

Thanks for any assistance you all can give me.

... but the suggested solutions didn't do the trick? That's strange - we haven't heard about any issues between MIR and Kontakt since quite some time now.

    What's your DAW?

  • Hi Dietz,

Thanks for your quick response.  I am working on a huge project all day today this is priority number one for me.

My DAW is in my signature (Presonus Studio One) however it is not the cause.  I can prove this and just did (see below).  Also, Both of the threads you pointed me to kindly, were about using Kontakt "Inside" of MIR, not as a side by side scenerio.  I am trying to use Kontakt 4 outside of MIR, not in it.

I was able to reproduce the issue without even using my DAW.  I just open up MIR and load a project.  Viola!  It plays beautifully!  I then open up stand alone Kontakt 4 (I have the full version, I do not have any free players) and boom.  My sound goes to shit.  None of the instruments in Kontakt 4 are playable.  MIR however is.  If I close MIR down, Kontakt instantly allows me to play perfectly without reloading Kontakt.  If I try to open MIR again Kontakt goes back to being unplayable.

I am on the following versions:

    1.  MIR version 1.3 Build 1841 (I just noticed there is a few updates to this, I am downloading it as I type)

    2.  Kontakt 4 full version 4.2.2.4504

    3.  RME Multiface 2 Driver date: 08/05/2010 Version: 3.08.5 (This is still the most up to date on the website)

    4.  Windows 7 x64 Enterprise

My MIR Audio Settings look like this:

    1.  Audio Setting for ASIO Hammerfall DSP - sample rate (greyed out) - Latency "Def."

    2.  Multiprocessing 2 Threads (I have 8 available)

My MIR Preferences look like this:

    1.  Venue Image Detail Level 1x

    2.  Venue Animation Speed 100%

    3.  Buffer Multiplier "1x" (Physical CPUs 1, Physical Cores 4, Logical Cores 8)

    4.  Dynamic processing (disable unused instruments) is checked

Going to update to latest MIR really quick.  BRB.

  • So Both MIR and Kontakt had an update, however the problem still persists.  Here is an interesting thing I just found though.

I have been always using Herbs preset or picking a starting point in MIR.  This time I decided to just load a venue with no instruments and it worked fine (Kontakt and MIR could stay running).  I then added some instruments (SE Presets of Orchestral strings) as well as full Appassionata presets.  Everything worked perfect!

I then added one instance of Vienna Imperial and boom, Kontakt stopped working.  So I closed Kontakt, closed MIR and relaunched them both.  Loaded the Teldex venue in MIR and everything was good so far.  I could play Kontakt fine.  I then loaded Vienna Imperial and again it died.  I then loaded the starting point, Vienna Imperial Solo and it died again.  If I even think to use Vienna Imperial in MIR I can get this result 100% of the time.

So back to try a few more combinations but it seems some of the Vienna Insturments work while Vienna Imperial doesn't (which makes sense to why my projects aren't working, I ALWAYS put a piano track of Vienna Imperial in my mixes, even if only for myself asI play the parts in live).  Also, NONE of the starting points or presets from Herb will work.  I have to start with blank MIR Venues to make it work with Kontakt 4 at the moment.

  • Thanks for testing. Does this also happen when you use Vienna Imperial not within MIR, but as VSTi directly in your DAW?

  • BTW - you _did_ disable Kontakt's option for handling multi-processor usage by itself, didn't you? It should be set to "host" .... sorry, I'm not in front of my system right now and can't look up the actual wording.

  • Thanks again Dietz.  Some updates.

    1.  I have the multi-processing set to "off" in Kontakt 4 (as a VST Plug-in), my choices were off, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8.

    2.  If I close MIR, and only use Kontakt 4 Plug-ins and a track with a local VST2 of Vienna Imperial it works perfectly (all will play in unison flawlessly).

    3.  After the updates to all the software (I did EVERYTHING, VI Pro, VE Pro, Vienna Suite, eLicenser, MIR, Roompacks, Kontakt is now 4.2.3) things are slightly different now (reversed).  Now, if I open my current project with 7 instances of Kontakt 4 plug-ins they all play fine.  Once I open MIR they still work fine, but MIR doesn't work (it lags and pops and clicks).  If I close everything and only have my DAW and MIR up, load a venue and load one patch MIR pops and clicks when playing my keyboard from my DAW (Loopbe is my midi transfer method between the two).

So now it seems that MIR is the issue and Kontakt works perfect as a stand alone, and as a plug-in with or without MIR running.  However MIR simply will not run properly with my DAW at this moment.  I restarted the machine, launched MIR and loaded one cello ensemble patch.  It worked great.  I then opened my DAW and created a new song.  I created one loopbe track pointing to the MIR cello patch and now it pops and clicks.  How strange.  I traded one problem for another lol :).

What is the best order to open these in?  MIR then DAW or DAW then MIR?

    Thanks,

    Maestro2be

  • I also want to add Dietz if this is even helpful, but if I take the exact same project and set everything up that I did in MIR, in VE Pro and use it that way instead it works flawlessly at 128 (6ms) latency.  Not one glitch running 25 instruments in unison all mixed of Kontakt instruments and 15 VSL instruments.  So the behavior is definitely MIR related specific.  Hopefully we can get this going because I prefer to work with MIR only these days.

    Thanks!

  • Hi Meastro2b, try to share the setting of multiprocessing between MIR and your sequencer (half for MIR, half for the sequencer, if it supported multiprocessing). Kontakt should be set to "off" as you did. Problems with Kontakt completely away since december. No issues anymore! Best Frank

  • Thanks Frank.  I tried everything.  I tried sharing the processors(cores) and every possible solution I could think of doing it on one sound card.  I just decided to install a soundblaster card with digital outputs.  Setup ASIO4ALL on it and set MIR to use that soundcard.  My DAW is using the RME Multiface 2 now.  I then routed the SPDIF output from the soundblaster card (ASIO4ALL) to the SPDIF input on my Multiface 2.  Set both sound cards to 256 samples latency and viola, it's perfect.  I couldn't take anymore trouble shooting.  This isn't a permanent fix for me but will definitely suffice until Dietz gets me MIR Pro :).

As of right now I am able to run Kontakt inside my DAW and outside as a stand alone.  I can run MIR while running Kontakt inside or outside my DAW.  I can run Vienna Imperial as a MIR Plg-in, as a stand alone or as a VST inside my DAW.  All simultaneously at the moment.  So it appears that it may be my RME Multiface driver OR it's simply the way my DAW handles that driver.  I am not 100% sure what the exact cause is but I don't have time to troubleshoot all day long on my days off.  So, ASIO4ALL it is until MIR Pro unless someone has the magical fix to this problem.

    Thanks,

    Maestro2be

  • Could it be that MIR and a second application are trying to access the same ports of the ASIO system? (... please see p. 78 of the MIR Manual for a lengthy explanation.)

    /Dietz - Vienna Symphonic Library
  • Yes!  a REAL fix :)!  That did it Dietz.  I didn't realize they were sharing the same ports.  MIR said it was using Analog Outputs 1+2 and my DAW using SDPIF 1+2 Outputs (but it called them also outputs 1+2).  I set MIR to use ADAT 1+2 and viola!  It routed it through the Hammerfall Mixer and it worked perfectly!  THIS is how it's supposed to work lol.  I was getting very upset at my RME Card lol.

Thanks so much for pointing me to that page Dietz!  That really simplified my setup again (which is always my goal)!  This issue is solved, please mark accordingly.

  • Whew! Great to hear! :-) I have to admit that you made me scratching my head quite a bit.

    Enjoy your "new" setup.

    Kind regards,
