  • Making demos "Imperial March" and "Battle of the Heroes" work with MIR Demo...

    Hello,

I'm trying to get an impression of MIR and downloaded the demo. I then tried to load the MIR config files included in the demos mentioned in the subject line. But both require " Vienna Konzerthaus Großer Saal". However, the MIR demo includes "Vienna Konzerthaus Mozartsaal" only.

I tried to trick MIR by editing the .mir files. In the XML I changed <RoomSelection> to Vienna Konzerthaus Mozartsaal, but that didn't work. I think there is a checksum or so that shows that the mir file was manipulated thus blocking the file from beeing loaded. (Paul ?)

Unfortunately I had to waste half a dozen trial demo start licences so far ...

Is there any other way? Maybe someone can help and load the mir file, change the venue and save it. So both great demos would be available to a broader audience.

    Best,

    Till

  • Welcome & Thanks for your interest in Vienna MIR, Till.

Changing the Venue in the XML won't work, as you found out yourself. But even if it would - a myriad of important parameters wouldn't fit, sorry to say so. There's _so_ much going on under the hood, that even in MIR itself the change of an existing setup from one stage to another will need manual adjustments of several parameters like instrument positions and directions, the setup of the main microphone, Room EQs, or dry/wet ratios.

Please remember: Using MIR, we are not just changing some added reverb on an AUX-channel. It's like moving your orchestra to a different hall, with all of its peculiarities. You wouldn't gain much from "just changing the Venue" for an existing and readily mixed arrangement. Room is treated like an instrument within MIR - so this would be like using a solo-trumpet for Mozart's clarinet concerto. ;-)

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Dietz,

I very much understand what you say about what's going on under the hood, cause I'm an engineer in acoustics and digitial signal processing and have folded impulse responses by hand in the past. ;-) So, yes, the result would surely be "unsatisfactory" or even inconsistent (especially for the sw config) but might be a starting point for playing with MIR nonetheless if it worked...

It's kind of frustrating ;-) having a demo and not being able to experience the full beauty of it. Maybe you can prepare demos that were set up for the Mozartsaal?

Or I just start playing with it and try to put an existing demo on the MIR demo room config ...?! Well, I still have some programm starts left ...

    Best,

    Till

  • Yes, thanks.

The mMIR config loads, hoever it gives an error saying "The output format used in this MIR project ("Stereo - X-Y Wide - Mozarts M2") could not be found. [...]  To avoid this message please make sure that all used output formats are stored in the output Format Folder.

    Then... Silence. :-X

Do I have to copy something (the file without an extension) to that Format Folder? Wait ... Tried that, but didn't help.

EDIT: Maybe the output format is not contained in the Room Trial Pack? (http://community.vsl.co.at/forums/t/27297.aspx)

    Best,

    Till

  • Actually the requested ouput format should be part of the installation.

Please check if the path to the Ouput Formats Folder (Preferences > General) is set correctly. You should see the requested configuration listed in the Output Format pulldown in the Output Channel (at the bottom of the list).

Let me know how you proceed.

  • PS - I just talked to our Florian Walter, MIR's main software engineer, and he looks into it. It _might_ be that there's a compatibility issue between the latest MIR-build and the "old" demo file.

    /Dietz - Vienna Symphonic Library
  • Ok - there's indeed an incompatibilty between the original TrialRoomPack and the latest MIR build. We will update the Trial RoomPack until tomorrow.

In the meantime, I'll post a link for you to download the missing Output Format. Just copy it to the folder you see in MIR's Preferences, and you should be done.

    Just give me 15 minutes ... :-)

The missing Output Format is available here for the next 14 days.

    Thanks for your patience,

  •  Okay, thanks.

NOTE: I had to edit the XML in the file, because it says .... MozartS M2 EXPORT. Changed that by removing the EXPORT and now the MIR project loads fine.

However, there still is no sound. The meter on the top right does not move, though it works if I create a new project.

But I cannot guarantee that there is another flaw with my settings ...

EDIT: It says ... could not load VSL Compressor x64, VSL Equalizer x64

    I'm running Cubase 6 x64.

    Best,

    Till

  • 8-) ... the "Export" was my fault - obviously I forgot to remove it from the name, trying to deliver it as fast as possible. Just rename the file and you're fine.

Did you check if the Vienna Instruments included in the tutorial MIR project have loaded properly? Careful - they are "RAM Optimzed", so only those samples are loaded that were used for Jay Bacal's realization of the included MIDI file of that piece. Do you hear anything when clicking the VI's virtual keyboard?

How did you connect MIR with Cubase? LoopBe30? Do you see incoming MIDI data being indicated in the Instrument List? Do the "Magic Eyes" of the MIR-Icons show any audio activity?

Is the MIR engine actually STARTed? (That would be the button on the left of the Venue Selection bar).  .... I was cought by that myself just recently. ;-)

This means that you either don't have these Vienna Suite plugins installed on that system, or MIR doesn't know yet where to look for them. Please add the path in MIR's Options > Audio Settings > Plugins Tab.

    /Dietz - Vienna Symphonic Library
  •  Yes, that's okay and thanks for the ultra quick response! Notice: I had to change the XML data IN the file as well.

To keep it simple I did not connect to Cubase for the time being. I wanted to do that as a next step to reduce sources for errors. I simple tried to trigger the sounds with the masterkeyboard. I see the midi indicator within MIR light up, The Engine is started.

Maybe it is really related to the RAM optimization in a way. But probably there are more reasons why I can get no sound. What is kind of strange is that there In fact is no (visible) sample loading after the MIR project is loaded.

Well, I "only" got the VSL Speicial Edition Plus Extended. If I replace 01 Flute 1 Basic with 02S Flute 1, the Flute can be heared. Do I need Symphonic Cube for the Demo?

    TFTH,
    Till

  • Yes, at least AFAIR. Clear the optimizations in the Instrument List Window ("Reset All") and see what happens. Any VSL instrument that licensed to run on your system will now load until RAM is filled up ;-)

    Best,

    /Dietz - Vienna Symphonic Library
  •  Tadaaa... none. The setup is completely based on the VSL SC versions. I think the instrument/patch names do not match with the ones in VSL SE.

VSL SE Plus Extended simply isn't enough ...  :-)

At least I now know how to get some sound. I'll play with positioning instruments on the stage and see how I like it anyway.

    Best and thanks for helping,

    Till

  • You're welcome! BTW: There are some dedicated MIR SE-demos available, too, for example:

  •  I tried the "reset all" tip and if you "only" have 24Go RAM (my case), forget it ! [H]

  • Is there somewhere a demo of "Battle of the heroes" with all the MIR settings etc. that I can open with my DAW? I've founded only an mp3 demo, but got the impression from the original message of this topic that there's a more detailed downloadable demo file somewhere.

  • Wow, I happened to bump into that specific demo on my old computer. I've downloaded it some years ago and seem to have forgotten it completely. I just don't have cubase so I can't open it. So now I'm wondering is it made with MIR or MIR PRO?

  • I downloaded and installed the trial version of Cubase 7 from the Steinberg site and opened Jay Bacal's Battle of the Heroes Cubase project with that, but I don't get any sound and I'm not sure if it loaded the VSL content properly. I can't seem to find any VSL instruments on the tracks. I don't know is this becuse there isn't any or because I'm a total stranger to the Cubase software. What kind of a setup should I have if I wanted even the dry choral parts to play in Cubase?
