  • Final Mix - export in real time or just export the file as a normal audio one.

    Hi to the forum,

I have been working fairly hard on a piece of music using vsl, but I am having a problem with my DAW. I am actually now downloading the update hoping that may fix the problem.

What is happening is that when working on the audio mix, I added some more  plug ins to the mix, and then when exporting it as audio in "real time" as I usually do, the export function crashed on me, giving me a message saying that the disc overload. This has happenned a number of times. And sometimes it does export, however, most of the time, it is not doing so when I add the extra plug ins that I have [I am already using plug ins, but I just wanted to use more].

However, it will let me export the audio mix if I turn the "real time" audio export function off.

In listening to the resulting audio mix, it actually sounds quite good, but I was under the impression that exporting the file in "real time" was the "best" way of doing things to get a great sounding finishing mix.

So, I am hoping that someone can inform me about this real time function. Is there a noticeable difference between exporting in real time and not in real time?

thanks if anyone has some thoughts on this.

    thanks and best,

    Steve.

  •  Steve, there are many way to skin this particular cat. Real-time can be essential for four main reasons:

    1. Your sample player is designed only to work reliably in real-time
    2. You're using external effects, such as a hardware reverb unit
    3. You want to listen to the mix as it is recorded
    4. You are using a sequencer that only has real-time (such as ProTools)

In your case, assuming that you are only using Vienna Instruments, the only important reasons are 2 and 3. However, if you can't export reliably in real-time, assuming that the project will play, you can always record to an audio track.
