    I am very new to MIDI orchestration so please forgive this basic question... this forum seems the best place to ask:

    It is apparent that VSL is a complex library of orchestral samples and sounds and is highly evolved. Rated as one of the top systems in the world, the VSL offers much more than just sampled sounds. I know this much!

    However, do I play these vast samples via a midi keyboard setup, thus having full control over composition and details or must I manipulate looped based pre-recorded music such as wav for AIFF files?

    just to add: of course it are basically pre-recorded wave files, a lot of them are actually looped - however i think we can not call them loop-based.

    you _can_ play it via midi keyboard and you _can_ manipulate them within a certain range.

    but stevesong is more than right ... please watch the tutorials to get the idea ...

    Hello U.O. The vast majority of the samples in VSL's database are single-note based playable instruments performed in a large array of styles - sustained, staccato, crescendo, etc. You pick the patch you want (say '8 cellos sustained with vibrato') and play its part using a MIDI keyboard. There are also multi-note samples, stuff like fast note repetitions and scales runs, arpeggios, glissandi etc., but apart from those there are no pre-recorded musical phrases. VSL is really aimed at people who want to create their own music note by note.
