  • Newbi question

I am very new to MIDI orchestration so please forgive this basic question... this forum seems the best place to ask:

It is apparent that VSL is a complex library of orchestral samples and sounds and is highly evolved. Rated as one of the top systems in the world, the VSL offers much more than just sampled sounds. I know this much!

However, do I play these vast samples via a midi keyboard setup, thus having full control over composition and details or must I manipulate looped based pre-recorded music such as wav for AIFF files?

    Thanks,

    U.O. Peterson

  • welcome uriahocean,

just to add: of course it are basically pre-recorded wave files, a lot of them are actually looped - however i think we can not call them loop-based.

you _can_ play it via midi keyboard and you _can_ manipulate them within a certain range.

but stevesong is more than right ... please watch the tutorials to get the idea ...

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • Hello U.O. The vast majority of the samples in VSL's database are single-note based playable instruments performed in a large array of styles - sustained, staccato, crescendo, etc. You pick the patch you want (say '8 cellos sustained with vibrato') and play its part using a MIDI keyboard. There are also multi-note samples, stuff like fast note repetitions and scales runs, arpeggios, glissandi etc., but apart from those there are no pre-recorded musical phrases. VSL is really aimed at people who want to create their own music note by note.
