  • XP/Cubase System repeatedly crashing with VI Special Edition

    Hello everybody,

I am running (well trying to run) VSE on an Intel quadcore machine with 4 megs of RAM, a Creative Soundblaster X-Fi, WinXP SP2, Cubase Studio 4.1.1 Synthogy Ivory, Artist Drums, Halion and Sampletank and very few Softsynths.  Even trying to run VSRE alone or just together with Ivory and having prepared just twor or three tracks I experience very severe Problems with VSE. It crashes very often just out of nothing, most critical is loading matrices os presets into a new vienna instance (no matter how many are open). Pretty often the system doesn't even load the trial songs that I am trying to orchestrate and crashes on loading.

Does anybody have a clue how to solve this problem? May this be due to Steinbergs new implementation of VST 3 in Cubase 4.1.1.? I've been looking around for hints in this and Steinbergs Cubase forum but didn't find a clue, yet. The way it is right now it is impossible to work with VSE.

    Cheers from Germany

    Tobias

  • welcome tobias,

i think we can exclude cubase from the list, since it runs here on XP32, XP64 and Vista64 and the 4 megs are 4 gigs assumably ;-)

did you apply any tweaks to the machine (especially regarding memory management in the registry)?

if we could define *crash* ... is there an errormessage, a bluescreen, simply quitting, something else?

sample data stored on an internal disk or anything else which might be related?

  • Hello Christian,

thank you very much for your quick reply, I really appreciate this.

Of course the times of Atari MegaSt's are gone a few days ago....  ....yes, I meant 4 gigs of RAM (not Megs), still strugling, that this is not the size of my HD's [;)]

The kind of *crashes* I experience is mostly while loading sound-data into VSE, no matter if its presets, matrices or presets. In this situation extremely often the loading process gets stuck, even after waiting about 10-15 minutes the instrument is not loaded. When clicking somewhere into the plugin or cubase after wating for a while, parts of cubase's and VSE's  grafics partially turn white or show other grafics errors and cubase is "not responding".

Some other times I experienced the problem, that Cubase just crashes XP with a bluescreen (unfortunately I didn't write down the error code shown.

I tried out the beautyful demo piece that`s on the vsl site and got the full piece to work - even replacing the VSE's Bösendorfer with an Ivory preset. Therefore I think, that it's not a lack of memory  Also I think that the HD should be fast enough, I installed vienna and Ivory on a separated brandnew internal Western Digital 500 Gig drive (1 of 3 of those drives ). The system is brandnew and there's not to much crap installed. The X-Fi soundcard is set to their "Music Production Mode", EAX or anything that could diminish VST performance is switched of.

As I bought this system thinking of migrating to Cubase 64 under Vista 64, do you feel, that this could have advantages at the very time?

Last not least I' ve got to add, that the library sounds just beautyful and extremely inspiring, so that I really am keen on getting rid of all this  unsatisfactory technology problem stuff and to use VSE to enhance my music with its beautyful instruments.

    Cheers,

    Tobias

who just returned from his real live job :o).

  • window content turns white ... cubase not responding ... hmm, i bet if this happens also the CPU load in the taskmanager shows high numbers for cubase.

a possible old (as i thought solved) issue: cubase running into a midi loop (some output routed to some input which is connected to the same output) - try to deacticate all midi inputs in cubase' tracks except the one you need (eg. for keybord)

stops loading ... either the disk can't read and locks up the system or something else locks up the system leaving not enough time for reading data. can you (temporary) remove not essentially needed plugins? where is the sample data stored? cubase is updated?

does the stand-alone player open and load regulary or do you notice the same thing happen when loading the same patches?

by sheer chance we checked cubase (though the 32bit version) under vista64 and VI/VE very successfully .... (to my surprise, because my last experience with vista was .... modest)
