  • Please help - an emergency!!!

    Hi there,

I am running VE on four XP 32 bit slaves and one of the slaves running the strings today takes forever to load the VE template and then once it finishes (takes 12-15 mins) when I play a particular patch the samples only play for 1-2 seconds and the 'cut off'.

Could my VE software (latest build) be corrupted.   I have tried many different templates and just start over with the same result.

Of course - couldn't happen at a worse time as I in 'crunch time' for a film.

Thanks for any advice you can offer

    (have the latest Synchrosoft update)

  • i would consider a harddisk to be dying ... or possibly more simple a connector lost contact ...

double check copying some bigger example files from the disk to somewhere else

have alook into the administration (of XP) - especially the eventviewer - for errors

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  •  Hi Christian,

What do you mean exactly by this?

have alook into the administration (of XP) - especially the eventviewer - for errors

Are you talking about the 'task manager'???

    Many thanks.

  • if it is a problem with the disk (reading data) the following should also make troubles:

    - open the disk/folder that troubles you (eg. strings) and copy one or more larger files to a temprary folder eg. on your C:\ drive

    - if this process also needs more time as expected the disk itself (or a connector) has problems

    - rightclick *my computer* - select *manage* - expand *event viewer* and select the protocol types

    - if any red or yellow signs show up read what the messages say (doubleclick to open them)

any possible heat-problem occured (eg. a fan died)?

any configaration changes happened lately? additional devices attached? unusual high CPU usage?

or: a simple midi loop occured on this slave so crapping the whole system?

    Thanks Christian,

To answer a few questions.  No heat problem.  No config changes on this PC.  No new devices attached.  CPU seems normal.

What do you mean by a midi loop?

I'll check the other items above.

To get throught the last 10% of this film score - can I transfer as many of the strings over to the C Drive and just run it from there for the next 2 weeks.   After the film is done send my PC to my computer builder person??

I am running a 'checking disk' on that drive now (with the 'scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors' ticked) - would that help?

I don't want to do this but if all above doesn't resolve this - what are the steps for putting the Orch strings and AP 1 and 2 on another slave I have here (and is not as 'busy' as my 'strings' PC slave.   Can I just send over the library folders from one PC to the other over the network?   How would I handle the Synchrosoft licencing on the transfer.

I don't want to do this but I really don't have time to send this PC back (I'll be without it for min 5-7 days) - that will kill my schedule on this film.

  • Christian,

Really didn't do anything but restart a couple more times and the samples play out right now????

In the 'event viewer' I show many of the same 'warning' from this morning.

"Raid0 volume "RAID Volume 1" is in a nonredundant, SMART state"

  • ahhh - we have a RAID in the game ... the warning: possibly a rebuild process kept the drives busy?

hard to do *remote diagnostic* now, but it sounds like some sectors of a disk (beeing member of a RAID?) have become unaccessible this morning.

referring to your earlier question to a possible workaround: yes, you can copy the data files to another location (on the same slave) or another slave (across network) - you just need to add the new data location in your directory manager(s) and transfer the respective license(s) to the right key on the right machine (transfer license wizard - has to be done on an internet computer) - see also the directory manager video tutorial

  •  Thanks Christian - I remembered this PC has a docking station.  I'll use a BU drive (reinstall library to that) - just to get me through this film.   This Slave is 4 years old.   First thing after the film I am replacing with a new PC (XP 64 with 8 GB ram) :)

I think this slide in drive to the docking station will get me through the next 2 weeks.   Thanks again.
