Hello all. I just joined up here today. I don't own any VSL products but there is a good chance that I will in the near future.
After a three year absence from the sampling world, I've recently returned to see what is on offer. Things have changed considerably since then, when I was using my custom edited samples from Miroslav, Siedlacek, Hunter, and others.
I've been trying to decide between VSL and the EWQL offering. Although I like the sound of the EWQL quite a bit, I am concerned that I may hit a brick wall in terms of musical nuance. (And yes, the lack of flexibility in ambience and pan position does concern me a little, but it's a secondary issue for me compared to performance nuance.)
I am a Los Angeles based ghost writer, and if that's all I did, then I would probably go with EWQL-SO. But I also compose concert works, and I really can't see "writing for the samples" when writing in this capacity.
I've viewed all of the Quicktime videos showing the benifits of the Performance Tool, and it really just seems to be great. It addresses the main frustrations that I had before when I was employing samples. What's more is that it appears that VSL will be utilizing the KSP engine in Kontakt2 to do what the Performance Tool has so far been doing, and if they implement this with a Kontakt2 version of the Cube, it should be a really great combination.
I've also heard a number of the mockups of classical pieces on this site, and I really don't think you would be able to do this with the other libraries (EWQL, Sonic Solutions, etc.). I mean, mocking up Ravel and Stravinsky to this degree, that's really excellent.
So, what are your thoughts on my line of thinking so far? If anyone knows the VSL, it would be you people.
As soon as the 3gHz G5's become available, I'll be making my decision.
Thanks,
Scott Rogers
