hi strawinsky,
get the taskmanager on your desktop (rightclick somwhere in the taskbar and select taskmanger, select processes, select choose columns, select show virtual memory) - look for the process msg32.exe and see how much memory is assigned
make sure you have service-pack 1 installed (rightclick my computer, properties and look at your windows-version) - if not use windows-update
if you have a somhow good configured system you should be able to use about 850 MB from your physical 1 GB, probably more
forget the 512 MB - this applies to W98 whithout tweaking
just to add: using EXS curently you can go above 1GB, but you are still limited with 2GB
