  • Mono solos

I am wondering if Dietz or anyone else here agrees with this approach to creating a symphony-in-a-concert-hall type sound (as opposed to something smaller or more intimate).

I've come to the conclusion it is essential - not optional (and please argue if you disagree) to use mono samples of solo instruments that are situated within the orchestra. Not like a concerto, with a soloist who is up front, but with a solo that is heard from within the orhcestra. This is mainly because of the stereo image of a solo being gigantic when compared to the stereo image of a section. Obviously you have to use stereo for a violin section, but if the "concertmaster" decides to play a solo from among them, this has got to be mono solo violin from within that larger space, or you are distorting the acoustical perspective in a most unnatural way.

The most extremely audible instance of this I've heard is when I was using all stereo samples, that were perfectly panned and balanced, and had a large orchestral climax with an ff suspended cymbal crash. That cymbal sounded as if it were forty feet wide.

Isn't this principle necessary for all examples of the same thing?

  • I blieve having stereo samples really allows one to have the most flexible samples.

Generally one can collapse the stereo field to "create a width" depending on perspective. I used to think that mono was the only way to go, until I found myself using samples for more than jsut symphony placement..

you are correct tho, you do want thinner stereo fields for solo in a symphony placement. if the samples are not recorded in that environment in the first place.

  • The more you want to move away from your virtual stage, the less inherent stereo-information should be heard from a single instrument.

All samples of our Library are mono-compatible (except one or two cases where we supply a dedicated mono-version just to be sure), so you can decide yourself how "near" you want to be.

  • It would be nice to have mono Gig versions of all solo instruments which
could be used in the initial stages of production.
Mono Gigs only take up half the space in Gigastudio as comperaired to their
stereo equivalent - so for your working template you coukd have more
    patches loaded on less equipment.
Then when it comes to the finalizing you just load up
the stereo version and use that for rendering.

  • Me and others have actually requested that the Giga folks give the ability to simply take a library in any format and simply be able to "save as" mono, stereo, bit, sample rate of choice. I don't know if it is being implemented but it could happen with 3.0. Well see eventually anyway. That would make for a quick way to save a composing version as well as keep a 24 bit stereo version on hand for recording.
