  • Paragraphs

Ho do I get any post I make to see paragraphs? I am on an iMac.

  •  Try Netscape or Mozilla - Safari does not work properly with the new VSL forums.

Or should I say, the new forums do not work properly with Safari....

For example, when I post or Edit (yes it works) with Netscape I have a toolbar of buttons but in Safari, nothing....

Oh I didn't even know they were there. I just assumed they'd been ripped out along with all the other functionality. Safari is my main browser which I use 99% of the time. I'm not prepared to switch just because this one forum has problems with it.

This didn't help me in Safari 2.x (I haven't installed the Safari 3.0 beta as I read about many problems it causes).

I regularly clear my cache and I deleted all VSL cookies but nothing improved. I now post to VSL (as now) using Netscape.

I understand that the VSL team is working on the problems and hopefully things will improve.

    The problems I have currently:

1 - Even in Netscape, [page down] and [page bottom] don't work so I have to manually slide the scroll bar to move down a page.

2 - When posting a reply, the previous messages are no longer shown below the message editing area. This makes it difficult to refer to or read older posts while replying.

3 - As I said before, the toolbar is not visible in Safari.

    4 - Paragraphs don't work in Safari

All these irritations don't stop me from visiting the VSL forums.

This remains one of the most polite and helpful forums that I belong to. The users are very helpful and quick to respond, and the VSL team is amazing in their responses. [Y][:D]

  • Page end and page down won't work until you click into the forum frame. That should be the same behaviour for all browsers. The reason might be, that you browsed the old forums full screen and didn't notice it yet.

    All the best,

  • The following do NOT work here in Safari or Netscape:

    Page up

    Page down

    Arrow up

    Arrow down

Only grabbing the scroll button works. It doesn't make any difference where I click on the page (ie any particular frame or area).

  • the scroll wheel (or button) usually is related to the part of the screen, above which the cursor is located (even without this position having the focus), the up/down page-up/page-down buttons are usually related to the part of the window which has the focus.

a part of the window can be the window itself, a frame, a scrollable layer (as in our case here), a dropdown, a textarea, some other elements ....

btw: the scroll wheel can also sroll left right if the cursor is above the right position and horizontal scrolling is available ... check it out ...

  •  Sorry cm - I meant the scroll bar of the window, not a scroll button or wheel on a mouse:

  • very interesting finding - i went into details to find out: safari does not scroll layers at all using keys (win + mac), firefox does (also win + mac) - seems to be a specific behavior and can't be changed from the code side.

  •  Thanks cm...

I'm now using Firefox for the VSL forums - it seems to work very well.

All buttons are visible, arrow keys work - what a pleasure.

Thanks for taking the trouble to check out these strange problems. Maybe you should write to Apple and tell them what's wrong with Safari! [;)]

    Regards - Colin

  • so at least we found a workaround for you .. regarding writing to apple .... i contributed with several comments and suggestions to safari on windows (eg one should be able to resize the window on every edge instead of only richt bottom corner, especially if the window opens bigger than the screen is ....) - guess what i received back: nothing!

IMO the most inconvenient issue with safari is that you can't set caching behavior in any preferences and it persitantly ignores any http-headers like *do not cache* or *content is expired* ... too bad ...

  • How are you getting on with solving the problems of paragraphs when using Safari?

  • the rich text editing capabilities are provided by tinyMCE, which is a widely spread and highly compatible editor and used by default for the forum software.

we could try to use another one to overcome a few issues with safari, but basically this is related to the special implementation of javascript in safari (see also http://tinymce.moxiecode.com/punbb/viewtopic.php?id=666 )

maybe the same reason is responsible for the fact, that apple websites frequently throw javascript exceptions if visited with other browsers (object expected, blabla) - also regarding this behavior i have written several times to apple without receiving any reply.

since this seems to have no priority for them i think we should not feel responsible searching for workarounds to fix bugs of software from much bigger companies ....

edit: since a few years javascript is standardized as ECMA script http://www.ecma-international.org/publications/standards/Ecma-262.htm

  • Regardless of whose fault it is, almost everyone on a Mac uses Safari, so might it be worth talking to the developers of the forum software? Or maybe shrieking at them? :) You know what they say: politics is the art of the possible, not the ideal.

  • with all due respect - the former forum software didn't allow rich text formatting or images at all and i'm already a little bit tired of troubling around to fix someone elses bugs or ignorance ...

as mentioned we could exchange tinyMCE with any convenient editor, but since testing and adjusting the styles would need a lot of time the priority level of this task is pretty low ...

nevertheless we can request this from the developers of tinyMCE (who are aware of this issue as linked above) and see how far they get ...

  • Hi

I use safari and the only way to get paragraphs is to use the br tag when you type. To add a line gap simply add two br tags.

  • Well, now Safari doesn't work for me at all. Weird - I just get a "bad command" message.

Let's see of Firefox enters paragraph returns...

  • I guess so.
