  • MAC MINI and Audio Over LAN

    Hi

I was thinking about getting a mac mini to run some of my Vienna instruments on to take the pressure of my main computer. I know there is Midi over Etherent to control the VI, but is there a good Audio over Ethernet so I do not have to run the audio out the mac mini and back into my mac?

I know that it is tought that maybe the Ethernet isn't fast enough, but then how come the muse recpetor can send midi and audio over ethernet fine? They use a protocol called uniwire, which only works for their recpetors. Is there anything like this for me to connect my mac mini to my mac pro to run Vienna?

    Thanks,
    Simon

Not at the moment AFAIK. You used to be able to buy a product called Wormhole 2 (which I am using quite happily) however this is no longer available for purchase. FX Teleport is (allegedly) bringing out a MAC OS version soon, but this has been the case for almost 2 years.

There's also JACK but I don't think anyone has managed to get it working without audio drops/glitches yet.

So not a lot you can do at the moment, unless there's something I've missed.

  • Hi Tim,

    How does wormhole work?

  • There's basically two instances; one on the remote pc and one on the main DAW. You can run more instances if you need.

I have 3 mac mini slaves and each has 3 instances of wormhole, my main DAW therefore has 9 instances. This means I can have 3 stereo channels of audio per mac mini with indivudal panning control/automation to and from the main DAW (I use Cubase).

This works well enough for me, in theory you can have as many instances as your setup can handle before it gets pops/clicks but I've not gone beyond 3 per slave.

  • Hi

Sorry, I am sighly confused. How do you get the audio back? I looked at wormwhole and it says it is for tranferring files via ftp. Are you using audio interfaces between your main DAW and the mac mini's or are you able to send the audio via wormwhole?

    I really appreciate your help.

    Thanks,
    Simon

  • I think you've been looking at the wrong hole..

Wormhole 2 is a product by www.plasq.com but is no longer for sale. If you do manage to get hold of it (no idea how though) you'll see it's nothing to do with ftp at all.

    Cheers
