  • Memory versus new Macs

I'd rather not change my Dual g5 for a quad just yet, but I'm keen to improve the 'power' of the Mac - to increase the number of instances of VI without clicks and stress on the CPU.

Does a virtual instrument demand more RAM than CPU power, or is it a combination of the two? Which is the more important to upgrade - the memory or the processor?

    I have 2Gb RAM in a Dual G5.

  • jim, it is more a combination of both, although the core 2 duo processors hardly run out of power unless you run eg. dozens of additional altiverb instances ... RAM is essential and the priciple here is: much helps much.
it turned up that macPro's (either quad or octo) with 8 GB RAM let you get very far ...

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • So do you think getting another 1Gb RAM would help with the functioning of the G5 and VI?

  • don't forget the G5 are already using dual channel memory (PC3200 400 MHz sticks) - so you need to expand your memory in pairs.
it is important to use only 1) specified memory modules 2) carefully look at the timing and layout of the sticks - they should have all the same 3) maximum number of chips per stick is 16 4) no parity, no ECC, unbuffered

i'd assume most users running larger arrangements will have 6 GB just to be on the safe side
