    I'd rather not change my Dual g5 for a quad just yet, but I'm keen to improve the 'power' of the Mac - to increase the number of instances of VI without clicks and stress on the CPU.

    Does a virtual instrument demand more RAM than CPU power, or is it a combination of the two? Which is the more important to upgrade - the memory or the processor?

    I have 2Gb RAM in a Dual G5.

    jim, it is more a combination of both, although the core 2 duo processors hardly run out of power unless you run eg. dozens of additional altiverb instances ... RAM is essential and the priciple here is: much helps much.
    it turned up that macPro's (either quad or octo) with 8 GB RAM let you get very far ...

    So do you think getting another 1Gb RAM would help with the functioning of the G5 and VI?

    don't forget the G5 are already using dual channel memory (PC3200 400 MHz sticks) - so you need to expand your memory in pairs.
    it is important to use only 1) specified memory modules 2) carefully look at the timing and layout of the sticks - they should have all the same 3) maximum number of chips per stick is 16 4) no parity, no ECC, unbuffered

    i'd assume most users running larger arrangements will have 6 GB just to be on the safe side
