    Using Mac, when a session load is attempted and the key is not plugged, the SySft placard comes up saying retry after re-plugging. All normal you would think but... it doesn't work.

    The song loads after re-plug but VSL never comes up. To get it to work I have to reboot from off AND I have to hold the power button or it crashes the Mac on reboot.

    I should let you know I'm using DP but I don't see this as a DP issue.

    Would like to know if this is a VSL key issue, Syncrosoft or Mac issue.

    Using OS X 10.4.9... Added: also did this in 10.4.8 I believe.

    gary, this sounds *normal* to me ... the AU plugin for VI is there, but the key to authorize the plugin not (-> error message). after re-attaching the key everything has to be re-read (incl. authorization for plugins) so a reboot or at least log-off/log-on is required.

    OK I understand that but why the HARD mac crash reboot? Why not a soft reboot.

    On ilok, it's just a simple replug. No reboot, no crash, no hold the pwr button and wait for tone.

    What I'm saying is that something at the very core level is killed in mac requiring this maneuver and if you just do a soft reboot the Mac crashes on that reboot attempt withe the placard of death. This is only on the VSL key.

    Again, only with the hold pwr button and tone will os x come back. Mac WILL NOT BOOT again unless this is done.

    The placard from syncrosoft says nothing about logoff BTW.
    It just says replug and try again.

    Don't you think that's a bit over the top?

    there are more things between earth and apple which i don't fully understand (eg. why is it not possible to configure the pagefile) ... anyway, the syncrosoft placard does not know who looked for licenses, but logic did try to load an un-authorized plugin, so to me it seems more likely to be an AU issue (close to the core) than something else ...
    i'll ask our programmers to have a look if it is even possible for a plugin to catch this specific error/hang

    That's fair or at least get syncosoft to admit the placard is improperly worded.

    It should say:

    "No key found. please insert key and reboot Mac holding power button.
    Sorry for the reduced workflow. I hope you have learned your lesson!

    Syncrosoft."

    are you sure this isn't somehow related just to your specific system - i only have logic 7.1.1 here on a PPC but can't confirm this behaviour ... open, close, reopen, ... no reboot needed ...

    I doubt it. I have several hard drives with Mac OS and the last time I posted a query on the keys was on a totally different mac installed drive. The new and current being a brand new Raptor with new installed OS X and updated all the way to .9. Are you saying DP could be part of the issue?

    I did ask that very question though in my opening thread however and I'm keeping an open mind.

    I have had the key itself crash as well as the USB buss the key was plugged too but not sure. At the least some research is in order IM(honest)O.

    As you know Christian, I'm one who needs improved workflow as I'm a bit spontaneous with ideas and parts with very little brain ram to keep it all in tact when waiting on things, my bad likely age related. [:)]

    I have also noticed the loads of VSL sw taking a bit longer on OS 10.4.9 as well. Could it be most of the time spent waiting on loads is related to rechecking of the VSL key during? is this possible?

    *VSL* + Syncrosoft/OS X/Logic (and/or, in whatever order) just gives me an error message if I try to insert a V.I. Player on a Mac with the dongle unattached. But I can absolutely confirm that inserting most if not all Syncrosoft-protected instruments from other developers makes whatever host you're using go BOOM! if the dongle isn't there. And it's a rock-hard crash with no option to save. I now know to keep careful track of what's connected to what machine in order to avoid this (which isn't necessarily straightforward if you review software all the time and have nine or ten dongles!).

    Syncrosoft says it's Apple's fault, but this is a pretty serious issue regardless of whose fault it is. It shouldn't still be going on, frankly, and if I were Syncrosoft - a slightly smaller company than Apple, one for whom this is a much higher priority, and probably the one that gets shouted at when this happens - I'd have someone shrieking at Apple 24 hours a day until this got sorted out.

    Interesting.

    Yes I have 5 separate dongles but I'm thinking about combining some.
    I wonder though if Syncrosoft keys are to blame. I never have this problem with iLok's on Mac...EVER. I don't think it's Apple based on that. If iLok's were also doing this then I would be screaming at Apple.

    Where's Dietz. I saw him carrying tons of dongles once in Wien, He must have some input.

    Well, in all fairness I think Syncrosoft offers developers tighter security than PACE (iLok). Not that I'd necessarily know, but I haven't heard of it getting cracked, while all the OS 9 PACE-protected TDM plug-ins were essentially free downloads. That security must come at a price.

    Nick, it may be more secure, but it certainly isn't 100% secure. Cubase SX and Nuendo both use Syncrosoft and both were cracked..

    Those that steal suck but it's really not the issue here. It's workflow using Mac.

    This report is simply to let the good people at VSL know that something is interrupting the creative process and hopefully they can remedy it.

    I can't be concerned with things like cracks that are beyond the scope of music, at least to me as I bought mine.

    I hadn't heard that, but Cubase and Nuendo may be the exceptions to the rule. Nothing is 100% secure, of course.

    Well, you know - personally, I'm more the PC-guy, and I have several Synchrosoft dongles, WiBu-keys and iLoks living happily together on my systems. (... well, as long as we don't take into account the Waves plugins on my iLok, but that's a different story).
