  • interesting that no one's posted about this

Last week Friday I saw the movie Underworld, and in the middle of the movie, being the complete sample whore that I am, I instantly recognized VSL samples. (my ears tend to tune into the most idiomatic "production" or "musical" things during movies)

anyhow, during the credits one realises that the whole movie is programmed with VSL and Spectrasonics.

    So uh..

congrats Herb and the VSL team for getting your library exclusively used on a fairly "major" release, that ended up being the #1 movie in America for this week (for whatever that means [;)] )

So we're here now. Major movies being done by sampled orchestras, good thing? Bad thing? I dunno. To me its the music that matters anyway.

I'll save my opinions on the movie for arguing with my ex girlfriend.

Wisemen likes his guns, and can always do something cool with them in the frame. I'm a bit mad that he's made all my trenchcoats even MORE unwearable AFTER the Matrix... [:P]

  • That is interesting. Do you mean they specifically listed the VSL in the credits?

  • yes

  • Wow! actually listed it!

What I can't figure out is why you'd want to argue with your old girlfriend.

  • Craig,

I don't think King wants her to be the 'old girlfriend' anymore [:D]

    Rob

  • I was curious and checked on Amazon. There is a CD of the filmscore coming out October 14th. I haven't seen the film yet, but plan to this weekend to see how the library sounds in the local billion-plex.

I haven't heard it yet, but if the score is good, you can't really get a better demo than a major motion picture. [:)]

(OT, but my First Edition library is coming in the mail Tuesday. Yay!)

    --Leo

  • nah she's just fine being my ex girlfriend. The arguing is easier now, since it doesn't start a chain reaction of events [[[:)]]] Arguing with a new girlfriend would be worse [[[:)]]]

but yah, the credits listed Paul Haslinger as Music composer/programmer.

and Libraries: Vienna Symphonic Library, Spectrasonics.

I'll be completely honest and say I wasnt too happy with the music (or the movie) overall. The cuts to Rock n roll cuts for one werewolf change was kinda cheesy (one argument with my ex) They intercut it with an actual radio being turned on. She says is "new" I call it old hat and cheesy to boot. Its a throwback to some older horror flicks which I like, but the whole movie has a much more over the top brooding attitude. They should have stuck with a mood and went with it. If they focused on the wolves more and the movie wasnt' bleached to hell so you could SEE the browns AND they had more "non score music" throughout it wouldn't have felt so out of place....but maybe I'm overanalyzing...you think? ;P

Add to it that the main characters dont know how to shoot guns (not that I do either). Note too self. Slow motion shots of people that cant shoot REMOTELY straight looks very stupid. Lots of neat ideas in the flick tho, but they need to stay away from the Zemeckis train of thought regarding trailers, which is to show the whole movie in the trailer via key scenes that have you anticipating them when you see the flick..... GAH!!

After watching the flick I felt the same I did with Equilibruim, its paced almost exactly the same way, so some of the pacing issues I had with that flick I have with Underworld. Atleast there was some nice clothes again [[[:)]]] Wimmer films guns better tho IMO (not better than woo or the wachowski bros), even if that kung-fu-gun-do fighting style is a bit over the top. The effects in UW were neat tho, and there were a couple of scenes (which I'd seen in the trailer) that I love (Lucius chasing the car is one of the coolest things I was anticipating). Again some great ideas, but just "eh" in alot of areas. I shouldn't complain much tho...I mean...I'll just go back and watch Queen of the Damned for a vampire flick that tried to have attitude, and cringe.

and DAMMIT stop cheating us with the *main* character fights! When Neo and Smith get to gether to fight we get excited about a big fight, when Donny Yen and Jackie Chan get together to fight, we get excited about great action, when you get to the last boss in a video game (what is a blockbuster movie but a video game?), we get excited to see how he/she will kick our asses. I feel cheated when I'm instantly brought back to Johnny Neumonic scenes (tho it had to be one of the best scenes in that lame movie)

oh wait, supposed to be talking about the music/samples [;)] hehee

  • Yaaaaaaaaaa!

the King is getting nuts over here. [:)]. I am amused!! And I am pretty sure that I won't waste my time with one another superficial movie. Even if it has great orchestral sampling in it. Go and create some really wholehearted music, please. I am fed up with all that boring bizzl-bang-sweeeeeeeep.

    Roman

  • What Roman says brings up one of the things I hate about movies today - how they mix sound. I remember hearing on the soundtrack album how good the John Williams score and orchestration for "Empire Strikes Back" was, and then noticing how they mixed it in the movie. With explosions covering almost all of the music. It is disgusting and pathetic. What movies need to do is return to the days of the silents, when the only thing you heard was MUSIC...

  • interesting that still almost no one's posted about this... [[;)]]

  • truthfully, I'm extremely surprised.

With all the Talk on NS about Sample libs being used for movies and such, the top grossing movie of last week not making waves in our community, but the 8 billionth orchestral lib making a wave......

    Well whatever...

  • I would have posted about it if I'd seen the movie! [6]

  • king, of course everybody at VSL is very proud and happy to see the library used also in top movies. besides - by way of contrast to others [;)] - over here it is not the sort to make big waves, otherwise we would soon face a really heavy sea [H]
