DEMO SECTION

Here you have the midifiles for the new Pro Edition demos,
including the gigstudio performance files and performance tool setup files.
The midi filenames are identical with the mp3 filenames of our demo section.

In each folder you find a ".mid" midifile, a ".gsp" gigastudio file, and a ".vlp" performance tool file.
If gigastudio quicksound database can't find the right instruments, you have a detailed description, which instrument has to be loaded on the different midichannels. You also find the name of the gigfile, where you can find the instrument.

I also noted the BPM the upcoming mp3s are recorded in, further the BPM range you can use the midifile.

So you have to load:
the midifile in your sequenzer,
the corresponding gigfile (or instruments) into gigastudio,
and the setup of the miditool.

First check if the BPM are set correctly, further some examples need no performance tool, so don't forget to set all channels on thru.

Example 1: HO_st-rep9_16-170+RS

Recording Tempo 170 BPM
midifile playable 168-174 BPM

Gigastudio instruments setup:

This is an example for using our fast repetitions with release triggers.
The release sample is the last note of the played phrase.
So if you setup your bpm at 170 and you play one note with the length of one 16th
you will get two repetitions, an 8th three repetitions, a dotted 8th four repetitions, and so on.

Most files are available between 150 and 190 BPM (some faster) in 10 BPM steps.

Example 3: KB-6_run_e-mi_180+0run

Here I use the alternation tool for automatic switching between runs and 0runs.
It helps a lot, because you can concentrate during playing to get the right transition points.
The first two phrases are combinations to get larger scales than an octace.
In the third phrase I use a release sample cluster to get a "run" with a range over a minor third.
Fourth phrase shows a combination of a sfz startingnote with a 0run.

(0runs are runs with deleted starting notes, to get smoother transitions for combinations)



Example 4: VA-10_st-rep9_16-115_mf

Recording tempo 130 BPM
Midifile playable 115 - 170 BPM

Gigastudio instrument setup:

I'm impressed by the dedication Herb and the VSL team show the VSL users. This is one of the reasons that I this week put my money into VSL! [:D]

Is it possible to store this kind of additional files, tuturials, examples etc. in the user area? Otherwise people could miss out on these goodies if they don't read every topic in the forum. For example, I know I read somewhere (where?) about an additional, corrective .art-file, and it would be great if I just could enter the user area and download it (together with some explantion of what it is, of course) , instead of searching through the forum posts.

Just for the record - the "dry" examples were gained to -0.5 dBFS to achieve better results during the mp3-encoding, so it's not the "pure" Giga-to-wav rendering Herb wrote about. The "mastered" versions are for listening pleasure only - you may achieve different results with different reverbs, compressors and/or EQs, of course :-]

Has anyone else had this problem? I would like very much to be able to view this so that I can get to understand the repetition tool.

Hm, I simply exported the files out of cubase vst 5.1 as normal midifiles.

This is just your Mac trying to be smarter than thou ;-] ... open the sequencer-program of your choice and import the MIDI-files to a MIDI-track from the file-menus (... that's where you'll usually find this command).

That's how I always load midi files.

I've never had any trouble playing midi files on my computer before.

I guess Cubase screwed up! [:)] Have you tried testing this by downloading it off the web page? According to my Mac's "get info" command, this file is a movie document. I'll try downloading it to my PC, and check out it's properties, the PC equivalent to "get info".

Mac's can auto asociate files with certain programs. With regards to Quicktime, this is a freaking pain in the ass.

Just import the file into Cubase, if that doesn't work you may have to change the way the file is recognized with a resource editor of sorts.

First off I have to say I got my library today and I am FLOORED! I'm sure I wont sleep for the next few days... [:D]

Also, like Rick I am having the same problem with the midi files on my mac. It was also the same with the midi files from the demo cd. I cant import them into performer (it doesn't see the files) and when attempting to open in quicktime it gives the message about it being a damaged or corrupted file. I am pretty sure however that it must be the file association as the icon it gives me is a quicktime wav format.

I'm not sure how to fix this file association. Any ideas on the name of the program that allows you to change this? The association editor I mean?

I just can't put into words how amazing this library is...I wanna call everyone I know to tell them about it, but at the same time keep it a secret, if you know what I mean.

hmm I wonder if offering stuff it files may help keep the macs from auto associating.

I forget what the editing apps are, but take a look at www.download.com and look for some resource editors, or file utilities.

As a service to "Overdrive" users and VSL I will try to explain, through a small tutorial. I've never done a tutorial so please bear with me.

First, I am a guitarist. It is my main instrument so I have a good understanding of how it is supposed to sound. All my programming was done on keyboard. I put some basic hall reverb and a quarter note delay on the guitar buss.

For myself, there are 2 broad ways to approach using this lib.

1.You can find a basic patch and jam on it to get your ideas down. You will have to go in later and work out your articulation choices so it sounds realistic.

2. You can start by having up a pallete to draw from and basically "compose" your solo.

of course you can combine different degrees of each approach.

Led Foot demo

At first it looks like i used a lot of patches but as you go down the list you'll see many start to repeat

Here is the basic list first.

A cool technique here is to play 2 notes quickly. A minor or major 2nd is quite effective and sounds like you are naturally bending into the note.

23 sec. 3 note phrase
This is the new performance tool function where you use 2 patches at the same time. One is for attack, the other sustains.

EG_perf-leg_slide_sus++

26 sec...trill....i used the pitch bend here to simulate the whammy effect

29 sec...same technique as at 21 secs

This is a simple patch and one of my favorites....This whammy patch with release sample has a lot of personality

This latter patch could have really been anything with sustain....I used a little pitch bend at the end of it to simulate a whammy bar.

53 secs

58secs...hammerons....this is a very Holdsworth sounding lick, and the the only really flashy thing in the demo. It is also very easily executed due the performance tool.
