Actually, William I was whining about something very different. I was complaining that in order to force a start note I had to leave a gap that was far too big. I could use a fA sustain instead, but the timbre is very different. Why do I want to force a start note? Well, it's a little thing called bowing. Look it up... [;)]

Since you were kind enough to explain what bowing is to me, I will be kind enough to explain that what I wrote was exactly how you force a start note without a gap. Though it seemed to sail right past you sir. Having a bit of trouble with the old eyes today? Or is it the brain?
O.k., I was just joking sarcastically but the point was serious, as this makes a huge difference in solo lines and allows exactly the effect of instantaneous bow changes in a legato line.

Given the fact that the resources use the same sustains, just in single layers.
I think I might have a solution. I got this from a big collection of VSL tips'n'tricks...
So, to force a start note after a sustained note without a big gap, couldn't you use MIDI CC 64 (sustain pedal) to continue the note after the actual note has ended? For example, have the actual note stop short of when you want it to end (as to force the next note to be a start note), and before the note ends, turn up CC #64 so that the note keeps sounding. Of course, before the next note, you'll want to turn CC 64 back down before the next note. So, the sound is connected, but the actual note data tells th next note to be a start note.

Sorry to be a little cheeky, I was just joking. However, this is a non-issue, because of what I wrote in the first place and is being ignored.
USE A KEYSWITCH. It happens instantly, and creates a new bow on a note which is the SAME NOTE as the start note of the legato samples, with no gap.
