  • Logic hangs / VSL daemon hangs

    HI.

Just getting started with VI VSL on Mac Pro (3gb RAM, 2.66Ghz)... I have run into some problems:

    1) After quitting Logic, when having used a VSL instrument, the engine doesn't seem to shut down properly, and Logic hangs on next restart. I took a look in the activity monitor and it looks like this:

    VSL-Server Real mem: 50MB, Virtual mem 429MB
vsldaemon (Not Responding) Real Meme: 6MB, Virtual mem: 293MB.

Two VSL "daemons" still being active, one of them hanging. I don't know if VSL-server (taking up 50mb of real mem and several 100 virtual!) is supposed to be running all the time?

    2) I get a click in my sound about every 1-2 minutes. Reminds me of the good old GigaStudio 2.5 on Windows 98 days.

I realize that this is still in beta, but I wanted to chime in with this. Especially the thing about Logic hanging when restarting is quite a big issue here.

  • Hi Simon

Sounds like there's something else going on within your setup - I've had no issues with pops and clicks VSL on MacPro although I use C4 not Logic.

With regards to the VSL Server and vsldaemon the daemon always runs and appears as not responding (even when first run) the VSLServer also runs until you reboot or shut it down manually. This basically allows VIs to be run without having to scan the dongle and disk each time you launch a new VI AU/VST, a new session of Logic or a new standalone instance.

    Cheers

    Tim

  • Thanks for your reply. Well, it is only the VSL instrument that creates these seemingly "timed" clicks. And my system is very well configured with separate RAID setup for samples, another drive for projects and one for the system.

    It goes even further:

I just have to launch a VSL instrument and quit Logic, then it will have "pissed all over" my FireWire soundcard, and only a reboot can make Logic pass the "setting up memory buffers" test. Could there be an issue with the VSL stuff and FW audio? I tried force-quitting both VSL processes, didn't help, Logic would still not start up until I rebooted.

I read at the Cubase forum that there might be an issue with FW and audio on Mac Pro in general, about 32-bit/64-bit addressing but I have no clue if this is related. I will be changing to a PCIe MOTU setup soon anyway, I hope this solves the problem.

    Currently using m-audio ProFire.

  • simon, there should be only one vsldaemon in your process list. did this happen by chance related to an update? please reboot your computer and have a look if two daemons appear again - if so you might need to uninstall and re-install vienna instruments software.

ps: no firewire incompatibilities known so far, one of our computers runs smoothly with a fireface, though we recommend to not have a FW-audiodevice and a FW-harddisk on the same FW-controller

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.

I only have one VSLdaemon hanging. The other thing "hanging" is VSL Server - which is supposed to keep running after I quit Logic? But vsldaemon is hanging, and I have to reboot before I can get in contact with Logic + my soundcard again. Not a big deal. I generally don't quit my sequencer when working in it. I will try uninstalling and re-installing the player software.

    Thanks.

  • Funny thing I discovered is that the click sounds disappear within playing the patch for a couple of minutes, never to return again.
