  • BINGO!

I got rid of everything and then just dragged the entire VI folder into the directory manager like the video says and then shut down completely like you said and viola.

You can imagine my panic with a mockup delivery days away.

I owe you your favorite drink JWL even if it's only a soda.

Hey Dave-- you're almost literally "right down the street". We are probably overdue for a meet. Broccoli, lemongrass, tofu smoothie, anyone? Actually, a beer or soda or even a Cold Stone chocolate malt would work fine!

... and "viola"? [:D] voila, perhaps? But I imagine it was nice to hear your violas again! [:D]

Yes, your panic felt quite familiar-- a little TOO familiar, to be honest.

The shutdown instead of restart thing stemmed from something cm once said about UNIX being a little stubborn (perhaps for good reason) at dumping settings.

    Glad you're back in stride!

  • Viola! LOL!!! Didn't catch that but if anyone in the world would understand that typo it's going to be you and our other illustrious colleagues here.

Oh yeah we must get together and ingest as well as digest the current goings on in the music/computer/conducting/orchestrating/panicking world. We will for sure. I may be submerged for a while here but I will let you know in any case about upcoming sessions etc. It may be 100 pieces btw, but that's provided the composer remains in one piece after the studio hears these mockups.

Thanks again JWL, I've never been happier sitting and waiting for VI to load.

P.S. Do you have Appassionata strings? I'm playing around with Beat Kaufman's Preset which is rather brilliant at putting numerous articulations at one's fingertips.

You know, I tried to download those once before and got a download glitch. I think I finally got them downloaded-- took 4-ever-- but haven't done the install because VSL and Syncrosoft were updating software at the time.

I've also been traveling a lot lately, so my heavy duty hardware stays at the home fort where it rests well-- but is "sitting up and taking soup".

I know-- gotta get those things loaded... and soon.

  • Interesting JWL because I went to download Beats WW'd presets and saw that there are now presets for all the orchestral strings which I have promptly loaded. Problem was that after loading Appassionata, VI-14, Violas, Cellos, I would crash. So I ...opened a single instance of standalone for the basses and VIOLA! I mean BASSES, I mean VOILA!

    LOL!!

I've just finished a big project, which culminated in leaving town for a while. I haven't spent much time on the big setup this week-- honestly, I'm trying to enjoy the "last of the summer wine" while I can. Things are going to kick in big time in a few days.

But, getting Appssionata up and running (among many other things, like Bidule and EWQLS Choirs) must be part of my interim updates before my next project starts up.

For once, I'm feeling a little bit behind and am enjoying it!

Of course, you realize that I can no longer look at viola without laughing!

  • Getting a very nasty midi loop on the standalone Basses however. Midi is set to IAC bus 1 so not really sure what the problem is, but I'll keep tweaking.

But JWL you musn't laugh everytime you see a violist because of the natural insecurities present in all musicians. [H]

    No-no--

    a viola not a violist!!

Unless of course the violist is a voilist!! [:D]

But we have clearly established there is no difference between the two: it's about time people realized the two words are interchangable. My guess is that many years ago a violist played in tune and the conductor said, "voila!"

While you're on the horn here: How do you have the standalone VI set up for midi? I have tried IAC but still get a loop. If I hit Ignore Midi Input I can't get midi to it in any way. IAC is the only offering I get within DP. You said in another post that VI-1 or something shows up in DP?

    I'll keep wrestling with it.

  • I'm going to have to go in and fire up the system to do an accurate account on it, but I saw VI Standalone in DP's menu (it didn't say "standalone", I just chose "stereo"). VI appeared in my Tracks Overview of instruments so I selected it. Then I opened several plugin instances and they each appeared as 2-1... 2-16, 3-1.... 3-16, 4-1..... etc.

Somehow, I'm going to have to see if I can get DP to display the MIDI data more accurately since each instance can only receive on one channel, ie: 2-1, 3-1, 4-1... etc. would make things easier.

I need to do some software updates anyway, and now is as good a time as any (since I've procrastinated all day...!!)

In the meantime, how are those Track Folders working out for you?

  • edit: Not fixed. I had the midi set up in the standalone to IAC bus which created the loop with DP sending IAC as well. I thought I had it working with my controller selected for midi in. Now it plays regardless of what instrument I select in DP since it's just responding to the controller. hmm...

    Earlier post:
Very kind JWL. Appreciate any info. Still tweaking.

I'm stuck in 4.6.1 land still so 'aint no such thang' as track folders. I'll go over at some point but not before a major project so as not to offend the computer gods.
