My advice:

1. Try the 002 with Nuendo before investing in new hardware.

2. Contact the Nuendo users forum for advice on reliability reports on 002 and recommendations for other interfaces.

3. Use the VSL forum to ask about sound quality compatability. Some interfaces may change the color of the VSL samples in a way which may not be desirable.

4. Search the VSL forums for Nuendo users and contact them directly for hardware advice to assess what hardware is/are at once compatible with Nuendo AND complimentary to VSL samples.

Ha, ha....I assume that this is a joke? Have you actually compared the MIDI in PT to Nuendo? Whilst there is no doubt that PT is a good audio app the MIDI stinks. It is improving and may get better still now that Sibelius is going to be integrated, but for a prospective film composer the features are extremely limited.

Anyway, how do you get the "fraction of the price"? Compare the price of an Educational copy of N3 to the DV toolkit and you'll set what I mean. Of course a fraction could mean anything [8-)]

Nothing is really missing. You can use Pro Tools for MIDI no problem.

Its MIDI implementation just isn't as fancy as the other sequuencers'. My keyboard skills are not at any performance level, so I rely on editing a lot to fix mistakes. I find Pro Tools a little slower to get around for that, so I use other sequencers for composition (and Pro Tools for lots of other things).

However, I was trying to think of a resason ot to use Pro Tools for composition, and I couldn't. It works fine.

Has anyone made an assessment on the reliability/compatibility of the 002 with Nuendo 3?

What is so special in MIDI in Nuendo that Pro tools cant do - I can understand if there are certain features missing - but what makes Pro tools so shitty in front of Nuendo for MIDI alongwith other sequencers.

I am not trying to take the piss. This is a serious question and I would really like to know because I am considering buying Nuendo 3.

I never meant to imply that you couldn't use the MIDI in PT. Of course it works, but the implementation and features are probably equivalent to those of Cubase VST from about 5 years ago....! There are features (such as the various Tempo process and Warp features ) that I use in N3 that don't exist in PT (AFAIK), so even if I used PT for recording, I would still need to use something else as the front end. ATM I use mainly N3 and Sib4, so am reluctant to add yet another program to this chain. Some here may remember that a couple of years ago I was fully intending to upgrade my PT LE to a full rig (at a cost of around £11,000), but for various reasons I decided that it didn't make sense, either financially or workflow wise.

I know that we've had this discussion before, but if you want to upgrade your PT so that you can do 48 audio tracks (wow, 48 tracks, cool man....!), then do so. All I'm saying is that you are not really getting value for money and for film scoring using MIDI you are missing out on a lot of time saving features.

One thing to bear in mind about PT is that the industry rumour is that they are going to be changing to a turnkey system so if you want to upgrade to a full fig at some point you will have to buy the whole package from Digi. I can't confirm this, but you could end up spending a fortune at a time when you probably don't want to.

So to conclude, do what you like [8-)]

Last year I started doing a sound fx editing/design project for a cartoon in Logic (since it also had some music), and switched over to PT after approximately three minutes. It was driving me nuts.

Pro Tools is a great audio production program. People qvetch about various things aboutu it - starting with the proprietary nature - but I find its interface to be really excellent, and I always feel that way after working on it for hours on end. It's the kind of program you can live in.

Digidesign is just now getting serious about making it into a composition program as well. I'm interested to see what happens.

Yes ! get Cubase..it is cheaper than Nuendo if you want to do midi only.. (and audio )
Nuendo is for sound post-pro editing and mixing and....by the way if you need midi
you got it....

I'm not surprised; Logic is not designed for Post Production. However, Nuendo is.
