  • WDM vs ASIO drivers on PC

I was using WDM drivers at first with the VSL VI. Seemed to work fine with just one instance. But with 3 or more instances I started getting lots of pops and audio glitches and cpu spikes. I switched to ASIO drivers and magically the pops and spikes disappeared. Just thought you should know.

  • Nope. I'm now getting lots of drop-outs with 5 instances using ASIO drivers. Seems like I should be getting much better performance than this. Any ideas?

  • Switched to different ASIO drivers. Now running smoothly with 5 instances. Seems very sensitive to drivers.

    Hi Jay
Your soundcard should have a special ASIO-driver with its own software "frame". There you can set different things like the number of speakers etc. One parameter is "samples/buffer" or something like that. It is possible to set different values: 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048...
The lower the value the lower the latency - the higher the CPU's stress.
So it is a conflict to keep on one hand the samples/buffer low and on the other hand the CPU stress low too. I guess the samples/buffer is around 256 at the moment. Increase it to 512 or 1024. The latency is ca. 23 ms with 1024 samples/buffer. It is only just OK to work with this configuration (1024). Try it out.
BTW Which soundcard do you have?

    I wish you success!

  • It is important that you choose the soundcard's own ASIO-driver.

[8o|] No Multimedia ASIO driver (MM-ASIO)
    [8o|] No ASIO-DirectX driver

Yes! What you say is very true!!

    Thanks,
    Jay

  • Computer crashed. ASIO drivers stopped working. ??? Retried WDM drivers. Now works fine with 8 instances + WDM drivers with very low latency. ??? Drivers may not be the problem.
