    Hello. I will try to be as brief as possible. Please bear with me. First my setup

    Main PC running Pro Tools Artist, iLok Manager, NO USB elicenser key, running on Windows 10 Pro

    Slave PC running VEP 7.x , Kontakt 7/8, iLok Manager, USB elicenser all running on Window Server 2019

    In PT I will load Vienna Ensemble Pro as an insert on an instrument track, connect to my VEP instance. Things will be working as expected for a few minutes then a message appears which I will attach as a screenshot. Once I am presented with the error message all sound is terminated.

    I purchased my PT annual subscription a few days ago and have had nothing but issues. Frankly, I have not been able to get any work done. I have to mention that these issues are non-existant in Cubase 13 Pro which I also use depending on the session.

    Would someone kindly explain the licensing scheme so that I may continue working uninterrupted. Your time, patience and assistance will be greatly appreciated. Peter

    Hello. Here are some basic answers.

    1 - Was the ProTools license activated in the iLok License Manager in the iLok key plugged into the main computer?

    2 - It is possible that the USB port where the iLok key is currently plugged in is the problem.
        Try plugging the iLok key into a different USB port.

    3 - Do not plug the iLok key into a USB hub but into a direct USB port on the computer.

    This looks like a Pro Tools issue rather than a VSL one. I'm also running PT Artist. You say there's no physical iLok dongle on the machine with PT on it, in which case you need to have an iLok Cloud session running. While I've had the odd glitch with this over the couple of years I've had a subscription, most of the time it works OK. You may have done all this but best get the basics out of the way first:

    1) In the iLok manager app, first sign in to your account.

    2) From the iLok File menu, choose "Open your Cloud session".

    3) Then check whether your PT Artist licence is activated. If not activate it by right-clicking and choosing Activate.

    4) OK a couple of times.

    5) Done.

    That's the first thing. Mostly the Cloud session stays open on your computer but occasionally you'll need to log in and open a new session. Happens to me maybe 2-3 times a year.

    Sorry, I didn't notice that no iLok key was used for Pro Tools itself.

    This is perhaps a shame, because this usage is generally still very reliable.

    The image posted shows it's PT that's unlicensed, and the poster says "no USB key" on the PT computer so that's the first thing to look at. Anyway, let's wait to hear from the original poster.

    First off thank you both for chiming in @TH2019 @nick.halliwell

    1) I am signed in with the same account in iLok manager on both master and slave

    2) Open your cloud session is greyed out on the slave PC (server 2019) Apparently only one session can be opened at one time?

    3) Open your cloud session is available on the master but see a warning that a session is already open on the slave if I click on it

    4) PT Artist always shows licensed in iLok manager

    5) I logged into my slave machine this morning. I left VEP open and saw the Authorization Required: Vienna Ensemble Pro 7 message

    6) No DAW was active on the master PC overnight

    7) Shutting down and re-launching VEP on the slave machine gives me the License not found message. I exit, launch iLok manager, activate VEP again, re-launch VEP on the slave and all is fine. Moving back to the master PC in the control room, launching PT Artist am am immediately presented with the prompt: Restore your iLok session?

    Forgive me for all of the screenshots. To say that I am frustrated at the moment would be an understatement. I feel like I have been running around in circles for a few days and getting nowhere.

    I am not able to provide more effective assistance with this malfunction.
    Especially since the configuration with 2 computers seems quite complex to me.

    For my part, my work is done on a single computer, admittedly recent and powerful, under Windows.

    My VSL licenses are activated by a single iLok key and my DAWs (Cubase Pro, Dorico Pro and Studio One Pro)
    are protected in another way. This simplifies things a lot.

    No worries @TH2019 Your time and input have been very valuable to me and I appreciate that immensely. I too began with a single PC solution. Unfortunately, I have amassed a good number of sample libraries which I would prefer to manage elsewhere. As a matter of fact I may be introducing a second HP server into the mix. But, absolutely not until I sort out this fiasco. Have a safe and wonderful day!

    Ah, sorry but I'm also on a single machine and mine is a 2023 Mac which can handle all I need (for now... that won't last long...) The original post had screenshots showing PT as not licensed and I just wanted to rule out the obvious.

    I used to have a physical iLok (v1) and a Vienna Key but nowadays all my authorisations are online, mostly iLok Cloud. However in this scenario I think you do have to have at least one physical iLok on either master or slave machine for it to work. @Paul answered this a couple of years ago here. He also posted a video. I've not used Cubase in years but I'd guess it has a different authorisation method which means you don't need to have iLok cloud on the master machine.

    Not what you wanted to hear, I'm sure, but I think you'll have to buy an iLok.

    @nick.halliwell Thank you again Nick. Yes Steinberg has now moved to an online authorization model as well. As I said in an earlier post my iLok is inserted into the slave machine. I have seen Paul's videos. I have been a member of the Vienna FB group for a while now so I see most of what is posted there.

    I decided to step away from PT Artist until I and Avid sort this thing out. But, I am not holding my breath. I switched back to Cubase 13 Pro and as I had expected, have not run into any of the above-mentioned issues. Oh well. it's back to the drawing board. Have yourself a safe and wonderful day!

    I assume you've made sure you're logged out of iLok Cloud on the Master machine and you're not running VE there (other than the link that connects to the slave)? Your best bet is to drop VSL support a line, they're very good in my experience. Sorry but, as I say, nowadays I'm running everything on a single Mac so can't really help.

    I read this specific reply exactly 10 seconds after I composed and sent an email to VSL support. Logged out of iLok Cloud? Hmm I hadn't thought of that but not sure how that would affect products that are considered Cloud Sessions. As far as I can tell there is no active iLok session on the master PC. Unlike when I launch VEP on the slave machine where I get a notification that reads:

    Authorizing your software with iLok Cloud. iLok Cloud Active

    The only way that I use VEP is as an instrument track in Cubase or as an insert in Pro Tools

    Sorry, brain not engaged when I wrote that. Of course you'd need an iLok or Cloud session on the master machine to authorise PT Artist. That's the problem. The only way I can think of that you could do it would be to have two iLok accounts, one of which has the VE authorisation, the other the PTA one, that might work as long as you were running VE only on the slave machine and only the connecting plugin as an insert on the master. Otherwise you'll need a physical iLok on one of the two, I think. However, don't take too much notice of me because, as I say, I'm on a single machine - and actually I don't use VE, I just have individual Synchron Player instances in PT.
