I am using two macines, one running cubase and one running VEP (cf. signature). I installed VEP 7 on my server machine but on launching Cubase on the local machine the plugin says "incorrect version" when trying to connect. Does this mean that I have to pay another 45€ for a proper upgrade (bringing the total to 120€)?

    That's correct.

It was this reply that made me shell out for an additional license. I don't think Paul would have said I needed a second license for my master Cubase machine if it wasn't the case.

  • Hi,

You only need a license of VE Pro on every computer you are running a Vienna Ensemble Pro Server on.

Sorry for the confusion. Simply try it.

    Best,
    Paul

Excuse me Paul, but this is not what you wrote above. Please re-read my question. I specifically asked how many licenses I needed in order to run a VEP 7 server on a remote computer and accessing it through Cubase on a master computer. I wrote that I couldn't access the remote VEP server with my current VEP 6 software on my Cubase machine, and you replied that I needed a second VEP license in order to do that.

When I replied that it wasn't fair, you explained that the new licensing policy is justified by the effort you guys put into R&D and updates. Fine, I thought. I didn't like what I had perceived as misleading marketing, but being a VSL user for years and a pretty solid advocate of your software I thought it was inevitable and purchased a second license.

If this wasn't necessary, please let me know how I should access the remote server through the master computer without a VEP 7 license (am I supposed to just install VEP 7 in order to use the plugin, with no license?).

Also, if the above is correct, I would be grateful if you could cancel my 2nd license and arrange for a refund. I have the serial numbers if you need them but I suppose you have access to my profile.

Yes, exactly. The VEP plugins don't need a license. Just the same like VEP6. But you can't connect the VEP 6 plugin to the VEP7 server. Both must be VEP7.
Just install VEP7 on both machines and make sure your license is plugged into the VEP server.

This wasn't clear from Paul's reply above. I didn't know that you didn't need a license for the master machine since I've had three licenses for years (since I first bought VEP 3 or 4).

  • Hi Talino,

I apologize again for the misunderstanding. I think I am simply too exchausted to follow your verbal excursions on a (for me) simple topic.

    PLEASE try the following:

    1) Install VE PRO 7 on both of your computers.

    2) Start the VE PRO 7 Server on your slave computer, with your VE PRO 7 license connected.

    3) Start Cubase, insert VE Pro as a plug-in and connect to your computer.

    Works? Great.

No problem about a refund for the unnecessary 2nd license, please send a mail to support@vsl.co.at, with a reference to this thread. We will have tio send you a deletion code and go through the steps of a refund.

    Have a great sunday.

    Best,
    Paul

  • I apologize if I have exhausted you on what is indeed a very simple topic. I will contact support for the refund.

Thank you and great sunday to you.

  • I do appreciate the debates about license I've been reading, but it leaves me a little more confused. I'm sorry to say Paul, but your answers are a little nebulous. All I expected was to continue working on my existing VEP 6 projects without interruption.

    To reiterate;

I have a DAW and slave. I use the slave for cpu intensive plugins. I want to connect my DAW pc to the slave pc but now it will not because the slave is asking for a license. I don't mean to sound ignorant but I'm asking on behave of my studio personel. It was setup months ago in working condition and now it doesn't work. I just need a solution to keep sessions running. If I have to get another license, so be it. But if I'm missing something to keep it running with just the one license, I would appreciate the solution.

    Thanks everyone

  • I'll try to explain step by step:

    1. Buy VEP7 (done)
    2. activate the license on your eLicenser (?)
    3. Install VEP7 on all your machines that run either the host or the plugin (DAW machine and slave)
    4. if you use VEP on a slave computer, put the eLicenser dongle with the VEP license on it into this (slave) computer
    5. open VEP Server on your slave
    6. done. You should be able to connect the VEP plugin from your DAW with your Slave

If you want to have an additional VEP host computer (second slave or you want to run the "VEP Server" on your DAW computer), you need to purchase an additional, cheaper license. Activate it on a eLicenser and put it in the additional computer.

  • Thanks bbelius. I'll be home in a couple of days to confirm. I believe an instance of server may be running on the DAW pc. Hence, another license. Thank you

Well, I'm home from my trip and I get to decipher all these post.😛 In all fairness to Paul, no wonder he's confused/exhausted trying to answer all our questions, driving him nuts... 😝 I probably need the other license, but it will be worth it, just to read all these post.😇 Hope everyone else has conquered this transition. Happy music everyone....
