    Hi all,

    Bit of a basic question, this one, apologies. I'm in the process of setting up a new orchestral template in Cubase, and have decided to use expression maps for every library. I'm trying to use the given SE+ expression maps with the SE+ matrices in VEpro. 

    However, Cubase won't transmit CC1 to the instruments, so the Y-axis won't change. I could go in, manually change everything, or design my own expression maps, but I can't really be bothered, given that expression maps are already provided, and appear to be fully-featured. 

    Could someone help me out? Am I missing something really obvious? A forum search showed up many similar problems, but no real specific/useful answers. Cubase is receiving CC1, but the Expression map filters it out, and it never gets passed to the VE.

    Hello Mike!

    The SE+ expression maps include CC1 data. If you have loaded an expression map with MIDI CC1, Cubase ignores all other CC1 entries that you have made for this track. You will have to use the expressions to transmit CC1 data to the instruments.

    Hi Andi! Hope all is well with you?

    Thanks for responding. I'm sure this is me being dense, but I couldn't figure out your answer, sorry. Let me do bullet points, it suits my brain a bit better:

    1. The SE+ expression map contains keyswitches plus CC1 - when I draw in articulation changes (in the MIDI editor window in Cubase) the CC1 data works no problem.

    2. However, by default, the bottom line of the matrices don't have any remote keys assigned to them.

    3. In order to make the Expression maps work with the default SE+ matrices, you have to assign a remote key, if you want to be able to switch articulations in real time.

    I've figured it out, and it's working ok, I just wondered whether there was something I hadn't understood properly, and whether there was a reason that the remote keys weren't already assigned. It's not that big a deal to put in remote keys for these missing articulations, it just confused me for a while, and confusion on my part normally means I'm not doing something properly, or have failed to understand something. If I've understood this correctly, or conversely not understood something, could you let me know? Thank you so much :-)

    Hello Mike!

    As you have already written yourself, the remote keys are just for live switching, but not for adding articulation changes to your project.

    There is only limited space for remote keys so that they don't get in the playing range of any of the instruments. That's why not every articulation has a dedicated remote key.

    Yes, it makes perfect sense, thanks so much Andi.

    On a non-entirely unrelated note, is there a document somewhere I could read that explains how you've put these expression maps together? They're very sophisticated in terms of combining attributes and directions etc, and I'm in the process of trying to understand expression maps properly (my knowledge of them is very incomplete).

    Hello Mike!

    Our expression maps come with a pdf manual. How expression maps work in general is explained in the Cubase manual. I'm afraid that I don't have any further manuals on this topic.

    Didn't realise they came with a manual, Andi - so sorry. I downloaded them ages ago, and simply didn't realise. I'm sure the provided manual will answer all my questions.
