  • Editing the VE Special Edition Sound Set

    Hello!

I am using the VSL Special Edition plus with Sibelius 7.5 with great success.  It's awesome.  I now want to bring my Sibelius score into Logic for some tweaking.  No problem, I just export and import a midi file into logic.  The playback does not translate however.  Logic, even with all the keyswitches that are imported with the midi file does not play back the part in the same way as Sibelius does.  One of the problems is the 'Y axis' selection I think.  In my VIPro the 'Y axis' defaults to using CC1 and this works with Sibelius of course but this seems to throw logic off when playing back the midifile with all this CC1 data.  I would like to change the 'Y axis' selection in the Sibelius VSL Special Edition Plus soundset to use keyswitches also (C0, C#0 and D0)  No problem in changing the 'Y axis' on the VIPro, but when I go and edit the soundset in the Sibelius Soundset editor and save it, it doesn't seem to have any effect on the play back by Sibelius.  I'm positive I'm editing the correct soundset - users/library/appsupport/avid/sibelius/sounds.  One thing that does puzzle me however is that there are many more soundsets available from within Sibelius than I can find or even see in that 'sounds' folder.  There are Roland soundsets for example, but I cannot locate them on my drive anywhere.   Am I editing the correct soundset?  Is there a better way to translate a score into logic from sibelius.  I know this is not a sibelius or logic forum but it seems that if I could successfully edit the VSL soundset and get Sibelius to play back using KSwitch triggers for the 'Y axis' then Logic would also play it back in the same way.

    Thank you!

    Andy

  • Okay...I have solved the problem.  It seems that if you use for the 'Y axis' in VIPro with the Keyswitches C0, D0 and D#0 instead of C0, C#0 & D0 it works fine.  For some reason C#0 did not work.  Now when I play the midi file back in Logic, it sounds the same and is triggering the same articulations as in Sibelius.  I have seen lots of things online about going from Logic to Sibelius, but I'm finding that writing in Sibelius with VSL Special Edition+ is so wonderful that I want to start in Sibelius and finish my recordings in Logic.  It's almost not necessary because Sibelius seems to do a great job of playing back, especially if you use live playback and the inspector.  Anyway, if you want to edit the VSL Special Edition Soundsets to work more easily in Logic when coming from Sibelius I recommend changing the Y axis trigger to keyswitches and not CC1.  This can be a little time-consuming, but I think it's worth it.

  • Hello Andy!

In general it isn't recommended to edit our sound sets. Edited sound sets may not be compatible with any future updates from our side and can't be supported from us.

Bringing your Sibelius file to Logic via MIDI shouldn't be a problem. CC1 can be used with Logic as well.

Sibelius exports CC1 messages with the exact same timestamp as the notes. This is ok for Sibelius playback, but some sequencers might play them in the wrong order then. I would try moving all CC1 messages one tick to the left and see if they work then.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Hi Andi!

Thank you for your advice.  I have a back up Sound Set if I ever need it!  I do find that having keyswitches for the 'Y axis' in Logic is better than CC1, simply because it's easier to edit....Anyway, that will be the only thing I change in the soundset!  All in all, using The Special Editions, VEPro, VIPro, MIR & MIRx with Sibelius is a revelation.  I was an original owner of the Cube for Giga and Performance set for ESX.  I only recently started using all the wonderful NEW software that VSL has to offer and it's fantastic!

    Best,  Andy Grainger
