'Pure' Instrument Profile

Hi guys,

I've recently been experimenting with the MIR instrument profiles, which really are great, especially for percussion (I was worried I'd never get the timpani sound I was after, but with the 'big' profile, 'fat' compression the 'deep and distant' EQ presets, it's sounding amazing).

I was hoping to clarify what was meant exactly by the 'Pure' profile - am I correct in thinking that this is the 'pure' sample sound, unaltered by any EQ? ...Or does it mean that certain rougher frequencies have been filtered out, resulting in a sound with a more pure-sounding tone?

Hi Pyre,

Thanks for the kind words! Glad you like our presets.

The "Pure" setting of MIR Pro's Character Presets means that you hear the pure (ha! ;-) ...), unaltered sound of the input signal. In other words, no Character EQ is applied.

... we will have to point this out more clearly in the manual, like we did in legacy Vienna MIR´s manual. 8-)

Character Presets

The fact that MIR “knows” a lot about the instruments on its stages makes it possible to supply very deep and customized ways of handling them. It provides for the seemingly simple but highly efficient way of changing an Instrument’s timbre or “character” by applying one of MIR's built-in Character Presets.

Individual, hand-crafted Character Presets are available for every single Vienna Instrument (with the exception of a few less commonly used percussions). Provided that the suitable Instrument Profile was applied (...), there will be at least five “colors” to choose from just by clicking on the pull-down menu bar. Common settings are:

• −  Pure (no Character Preset applied; default)

• −  Air

• −  Silk / Silver

• −  Bite

• −  Distant
• −  Warm

HINT: Most of the time, selecting an adequate Character Preset will show that little – if any – other processing is necessary down the line. (...). – CAUTION: If you have the feeling that your computer is running out of CPU power, be aware that some Character Presets may use up quite a bit of it.

In cases were there are no customized settings for an instrument or if a General Purpose profile is employed, more generalized presets are used. Those presets are marked with additional asterisks (*) after the name.

Brilliant, thanks very much Dietz, that's exactly what I was after. I did contemplate asking for EQ curves for each preset, but thought that might be focusing too much on the technical instead of MIR's more intuitive approach of descriptive words/colours alone. So that image is very useful for me (and in some cases not quite what I expected).

Having only recently come to MIR, I have not read the legacy manual, so unfortunately did miss out on all of the above.

No need for excuses! :-) The legacy manual is not online any more, and I have yet to integrate the finer details (like the Character EQ curves) into MIR Pro's manual. That's why I posted this information here.
