    Thanks for Dim-Cellos demos.

    I hate to ask you this .... But, Do you think they sound a bit muffled/squashed, also kind of harsh/metallic and flat sounding, rather than warm and rounded ?   

    Could it be a production issue ?   I love your Dim-Violins demos, so I'm not sure if this is something you can improve. I also hope that it's not the samples themselves, but rather a production detail that can easily be improved.  

    Again, I hate to sound critical, but since no one has commented on these demos, I felt I will take the initiative to do so. 

    I have not yet installed Dim-Cellos on my system, (waiting for my VSL Drive) to arrive so I can install from the HD.  I will give Dim-Cellos a good test once I have them installed, and do some experimenting with them to better evaluate them.

    Those are fantastic!  The music is really enjoyable and the overall sound is great.   The last one is particularly amazing piece of beautiful work in a small form using a wide variety of articulations - wow!  I am again impressed by these demos from Guy.

    Interesting you don't hear the issues I mentioned with these demos. 

    I guess one of us needs an ear checkup   [:D]

    Muziksculp, I think some people look for a particular aspect of the cello sound and if that's not what they expect they dismiss it, hope I'm not being mean here. ;) Other people will appreciate the overall qualities of what they hear. Personally, I do. But I will still try to make better cello demos in the future as is my nature. I played around with the velocity, bringing it down, I think, if anything, it gives the sound less credibility, a minimum of vel is necessary to feel that string vibrating. Maybe tame some of the higher frequencies on certain notes. I'm not saying it's all perfect, will keep on doing better as I did with dimension violins, there is a little learning curve for each library that gives you multiple possibilities.

    Guy - you once did an oboe demo which I personally thought was sublime and musically you are excellent old school. But these cellos don't sound good. Sorry - but there it is.

    I'm sorry if I have spread this to one other forum.  But... I'm just being honest.  Hope that's not a problem these days. 

    Hopefully, you can improve these wonderful demo compositions from a production aspect to sound better. 

    You are a very talented composer, so I hope you accept, and respect my critique in a professional, and positive perspective.

    I will be working on new cello demos instead of going back to these ones.

    What music forum is that?

    Guy - lets get it straight. There's music and there's sound. 2 entirely different things.

    THE SOUND of these cellos is NOT GOOD. It may be a simple case of programming. I have no idea what you do. 

    The music as always is very good.

    Paul, you've stated this in your previous post. Yeah, I got it, you think the SOUND is NOT good. Fine. 

    As for me, I know there are some things, I didn't do right, and will improve in the future cello demos. Is there anything more to say?

     Guy, I love your demos pretty much. Your Demo's are pretty great. These Dimension Cellos are not the greatest, but I know you can do better and improve, afterall, that is what being an artist is.

    I have to agree. This makes me not want to buy dimension strings. Special edition sounds better, in my opinion. Not sure if it's the instrument samples themselves or the mix, though...

    Muziksculp provided some of his qualitative description of what he dislikes about the sound which somehow I guess tries to describe his perception. I think it'd be useful to ask the last two posters for what aspects of the sound they find "sounding bad". In all fairness and with all due respect, you'd be better off elevating the conversational level around such comment as otherwise some people, yours truly included, would tend to dismiss your comments rather easily for finding them trivially unfounded.

    Guy is being made to produce a totally perfect sound with absolutely new instruments which have completely different acoustic characteristics on a regular basis, and it is stupid to attack these demos this way.   I didn't even hear any problem since I liked the music so much.   Maybe they need some EQ?  So what?  That is normal for new sounds.   So you say "I'm not buying this library" blah-blah - what a bunch of crap.

    I don't believe anyone is trashing them at all. A more accurate statement might be to say that with the bar of expectation set so high, some listeneres (like me) experienced a slight sense of disappointment that the cello sound in these demos (and certainly not Guy's obviously exceptional writing) didn't quite send shivers down their spine like the violin demo's did. A small thing, let's keep it in perspective.

    My understanding is that Guy's demos are sponsored by VSL as a way to entice people like me to buy them. These particular demos sound thin and brittle and do not appeal to my ears at all, especially compared to previous products. Guy is a fine VSLman, so that makes me immediately suspect the samples. Or it could be that there are a lot of high notes for the cello, which aren't too enjoyable at the best of times. Or maybe, as you imply, it's that Guy is "being made to produce" demos with instruments he's not familiar with in a rushed way, which if true would be a silly approach to promotion. Whatever the reason -- why would anyone spend $1000 unless the demos blow them away? Listening to demos is literally the only way of evaluating libraries short of putting up a large sum of cash. So, no sale here. Not yet. Not even if a guy on the internet called William says it's "the best thing."
