  • Vienna Emsemble - Error Message and Crash

    PC

    RainRecording

    Intel Pentium Core 2 Quad

    4 Gb Ram

    Windows XP

    SONAR

VI SPECIAL EDITION (Standard and Expanded) with EMSEMBLE

    3 HardDrives (2 are Raided)

C:\ = System, D:\ = Sample Library (where VI is at), E:\ = Audio (Where SONAR files store outputted audio)

    Hi, My name is Frank.

I recently acquired some knowledge on how to create my own patches for my emsemble needs.  I created a VE File with over 14 instruments with complex matrices (well, complex to me), for example, an orchestra arrangement with 4 Woodwinds, 3 Brass, 5 Strings, Piano and Percussion, with the Woodwinds, Brass and Strings having a horizontal matrix of the different aritculations: Staccato, Legato, etc. with a vertical matrix moving from a single instrument to a section of the same instrument.  So as you can imagine, there are a lot of files being loaded (almost 6-10 files for one matrix).  I trust my machine can handle a lot...  But for some reason, when I open VE and load up the vframe, it crashes.  Then when I restart the program it loads up just fine.  Then it may crash later for no reason. with simple actions such as minimizing the keyboard so that I can see VE's Mixing Console.  My CPU never reaches 15% though!!!  What is happening?  Anyone else have this problrem?  Thanks!!!  [H]  I love the Library!  (Brilliant Matrix solution for switching articulations!)

  • Can you give a a bit more detail about the memory being used, according to Task Manager:

    1) Sonar

    2) Vienna VE

    3) Have you set the /3Gig switch

    DG

  • I have read about the 3gb switch, but...  not quite clear on how to do it.  A site I went to showed the original command lines for what I thought was for every PC, (is every PC different when it comes to that?) and they did not match what I had...

Do you think Rain Recording would still support me if I tweak those settings?  Also, can you give me a procedure for the Task Manager? Do I click on the Processes tab for that?  Thanks DG!

  • OK, before I say anything else you need to check TM. Right click on the bottom of your screen, (where all the little icons are) and click Task Manager. then click Processes. You will see all the programs that are currently running on your system. The two in question (probably) are Sonar.exe and Vienna Ensemble.exe. Let us know at what value Mem Usage is when you system crashes.

  • One other thing. Are you sure that you have 3 hard drives? Do check that C and D aren't the same physical drive, just with a partition.

  • I'll double check, but I'm pretty sure I loaded it with 3 HardDrives.  When I get home in an hour, I'll be able to provide you with more detail.  Thank you again.  One last question though... Am I doing too much?  Are my specs ok for what I was doing?  Should I have saved my matricies as I was creating them?  Thanks!

  • You should always save your matrices, but in this case it is a bit of a stable door situation. I won't know whether or not you are doing too much until you check Task Manager.

  • Ok, it crashes at:

    • 1,955,944K
    • There are 31 processes occuring
    • and the Commit Charge is at 2211M/5209M

    Again, my specs are

    Intel Core 2 Quad CPU

    Q6700 @ 2.66GHz

    2.67GHz, 3.24 GB of RAM

But then....   When I try again a second time.... It fully loads at

    1,968,376 K...

But no way does it let me ad anymore instruments, then it crashes, or is very fussy and crashes even when i minimize it.

    Thanks!

  • 3GB RAM minus 1GB for the kernel leaves 2GB for applications (resp. everything running in the user space) ... sorry, get more RAM

    christian

btw: i would check on which value the pagefile is set ... i'd recommend to fix it somewhere between 1 and 1.5 GB .... or actually switch it off if your other applications allow so

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • Well, its says 3.24 Gb RAM, but i have 4 sticks, all 1 Gig each... Does your answer still stand?

    Frankz

  • I tried the /3Gb switch and success!!!  Thank you for your assistance!  No more crashing.  I can run a full orchestra, GVI and SONAR with no problem.

    Frankz.

  • interesting .... this has not been neccessary on a machine with 4 GB here ....

btw: your reply indicates that XP does only see 3.24 GB from the installed 4 (i assumed the number to be a rounding issue from MB to GB initially)

rain recording are building streamlined DAWs AFAIK, so i'm wondering how they configured it that 0,76 GB (!) address space is used by some devices, is there any PT hardware involved?

.... my 4GB computers here are showing all ~3,75 GB available for XP

  • I am not sure.  I'm not that educated on how memory works, but i did advise them of my problem and the solution i came up with.  How they configured the difference from the 4 Gb using .76 for other devices.  What is PT Hardware?  Is this an unusal fix for my situation?  Or is this a good thing?

    Frankz.

  • I think CM was thinking about ProTools-hardware - always a good reason for funny hardware-configurations 8-)

  • dietz is right (i should really take the time to write a few more letters) - some PCI cards need a large amount of (memory-)address space *mapped* into the upper part of the memory area (eg. ProTools HD). the physical RAM in this area is not addressable then for XP.

this seems also to apply to some graphic or video cards and/or BIOS settings - consequently something the system builder should take care.
