... if you're on Windows, I've made good experiences with Maxtor-drives. LaCie-drives seem to behave better on a Mac. CM may have the details, but in short, this seems to depend on the firmware to a certain amount.
... in any case, for serious work, it seems to be good idea to spread the library across several disks. Reason one: you should always leave quite a bit of free space available. Reason two: it makes live much easier when you want to expand your setup to a second computer. (Reason three ... not to talk about minimizing the risk of loosing the whole library with one single disk-crash.)
