  • Library Installation Problem/Not Reading Vienna DVD

    Hello,
I've just purchased the license for Woodwinds 1 and Solo Strings and am having a problem getting the library installed. I've downloaded the syncrosoft and vienna instruments software installers (containing also the library installer), and licenesed everything to the USB key. So all of that is taken care of.

My problem is when I am trying to install the Vienna Instruments Library; After running ViennaInstrumentsSoftware-XP1.10.exe, I insert the Woodwinds 1 disk (the first disk) into the DVD drive to load the library; then I click the LibraryInataller.exe program. Next, I believe I'm supposed to be looking for the package.info file. But in the file window pane for the DVD, nothing appears. No files at all. As if the DVD is not being read.

Further, if I go to windows explorer and explore the DVD, there is nothing there -- a completely blank file window.

Do you think this is an installer problem or a DVD reader problem? I've checked the DVD for scratches, etc. but it's fine. The DVD is an LG unit and is fairly new and has read everything else reliably so far.

    Thanks if you can help,

    Mahlon Bouldin

  • mahlon, after installing the vienna instruments software you should find a new program group named *vienna instruments* - in this program group there is the library installer. (you might have to take the path from *all programs* in your start menu)

if the explorer does not show any files, there might be indeed a read-problem (please consider the DVDs are double layer and we noticed a few DVD-drives don't read them properly - i'd try to simply re-insert the DVD)

  • Thanks, Christian. I believe it is indeed a DVD reading problem. The Woodwinds 1 01 disk showed no files or data at all in windows explorer, and the Solo Strings 01 disk hung during installation.

I've brought them with me to work to find out if I can see and copy the files in our NEC DVD drives. My studio DVD drive at home is a LG, and I believe you said (in other threads) that you've noticed problems with some LG, Pioneer or Sony.

Will report back to let you know if this is for sure the case.

    Thanks again,

  • thank you for reporting back - thus LG-drives are also used for some models labeled sony and pioner and obviously for a few dell-computers. it seems to be limited to a certain series of a specific model - eg. the same model sold in japan not reading DVDs, worked flawlessly here in vienna ... IMO this are simply the drawbacks of excessive price-dumping ...

  • Well, it's reading fine here at work, so I'm assuming that it is an LG problem. I'll find out the drive product number and post it in case anyone else has these problems.

Am now removing my work drive to take to the studio and try it out there.

  • DVD-drives (and usually more important DVD-writers) contain information about used media in their firmware. each media-type (also vendor-specific) has certain characteristics which the laser in the drive has to consider, for this reason every CD/DVD has a specific code. this *fingerprint* is read by the drive, then adjusted everything for best performance (speed, intensity, focus, ect).
if such a firmware is say *sloppy*, erronous information might be passed to the dvd-drive possibly resulting actually in failing to read.
especially for DVD-writers there are regulary firmware updates available which mostly solve such problems, but of course it could be a simple mechanical problem too.

  • Thanks again, Christian. I performed a firmware update on the LG drive and now it reads the DVDs correctly. It's the LG 2166D external USB DVD drive. The new firmware is 1.01 (the old was 1.0). So everything works well now.

On to getting to know these samples!!

  • thanks for letting us know and great it works now. unfortunately not every user is skilled enough for such a procedure which sometimes results in a frustrating *does not work* experience.
    have fun now, christian
