  • Best CPU for Appassionata String

    Hi Guys,

I am just a step away ordering your great appasionata strings. Now my question: I just want to run the lib (full edition) on an extra computer.

My preferred system would be: P4 3,4 GHZ(Prescot) with 80 serial ATA Harddisk.
I also would like to purchase more than 2 GB Ram (maybe 4GB) but I have read that there is not a proper support for more than 2 GB is that right?

I was also wondering if there would be better performance with a dual core cpu or not.

Will the library runs proper on the p4 mention above. Proper means in realtime with no bounce or freeze need to do.

    Thanks and kind regards
    Kai

  • I have two slaves P4 3Ghz, 2 Gigs RAM, on Sonar 6 and I can load up to 8-11 VST (per computer) without problem.

All the data is stock in the RAM so no click, pop, bounce, freeze, ...

I'm planning another one for my GVI and VSL VI Brass [[;)]]

  • welcome kai,
just curious - who says there is no proper support for more than 2 GB?
eg. we have a prescot machine here with 4 GB. IIRC we had more than 30 instances running on it without a tweak, apply the /3GB switch and you can load almost 3 GB sample headers ... not too bad ...

  • Thanks for the quick response. Just thought I have read that on the sticky thread in this forum that there is, in that case, was [;)] a problem with more than 2 GB. But if there is no prob that´s of course great.

30 Instances means 30 Instruments? Or how many instruments can the VSL Interface handle? (sorry for the question I have run only Gigastudio for years now [;)]

edit: btw: regarding the mixdown later; are the samples without reverb recorded near, far or stage? I did not find any information about that....

    Regards Kai

kai, the 2GB border is somehow a bummer on windows, on one hand a series of computers cannot hold more than 2 GB, on the other hand you have to face this split of windows memory in kernel and user space (only user space is available for loading samples), so on a *normal* 4 GB machine you can load 2 GB and it can crash if you want to load more.
avoid the 2 GB barrier having 4GB setting the /3GB startup switch,

30 instances means 30 players as VST in a host - you can now load one or more instruments into a single instance (which does not always make sense of course) - eg chamber strings have combined patches (violin, viola, cello, doublebass). 30 standalone instances would need too much GUI ressources i think for any machine.

VSL samples from ViennaInstruments are recorded dry, as the samples from the pro edition and the horizon series are (*no room*, therefore no stage or hall position inherited)

did you have a look at our vido tutorials already?
